Richard Lawson, 86, passed away in his sweet, quiet manner March 28, 2018 after a long, courageous struggle with Alzheimer’s. He was gentle, kind, and brave until the end. His wink and his smile endured, always delighting friends and caregivers with his positive attitude. Richard was an adventurous, gentle, and generous man who, after two major heart surgeries and the devastation of Alzheimer’s, lived his life as fully as possible with an enduring and positive spirit. Life was so precious to him.
He grew up in Lafayette, IN where he excelled at track and tennis. He joined the Air Force after high school and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. Richard then attended Indiana State University on the GI Bill where he earned his Master’s Degree. A lifetime in the publishing world continued until his retirement to Williamsburg in 1996.
His kind ways will endure forever in the memories of his wife of 29 years, Katherine; his beloved step-daughter, Andrea; his stepson, Jason; and his daughter, Stacie. He will be fondly remembered and missed by many amazing friends and colleagues throughout the world.
The family wants to express thanks to the remarkable staff at Patriots Colony. Their devotion to Richard was outstanding. Special thanks to Convalescent Care and Rehabilitation. EXTRA special thanks to our wonderful new friends at Springhouse. They loved and cared for Richard like he was a part of their family and always knew what to do and when to do it. And our most heartfelt gratitude to Marlena and Katie at Hospice Community Care. Their knowledge, kindness, and extensive professional care made the transition a lasting, loving memory.
Please remember the Alzheimer’s Foundation when you plan your annual donations.
Commemoration will be private and arranged by Nelsen Funeral Home.
