

Upon graduation from high school, she began a career with the Travelers Insurance Company that was to encompass more than 37 years. In the mid-60s, she was promoted to manager and transferred to the Wilmington, DE office. Her performance appraisal that year read that, “she walks fast, talks fast and gets things done fast.” In 1971, she was transferred to Providence, RI where she met her future husband, Yorke. They recently celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary. In 1977, they were transferred to Hartford, CT and settled in the suburb of Glastonbury. During that time they served as foster parents to five children, and Gladys participated in a program for visiting shut-in seniors and was also a member of the Republican Women’s Club. In 1995, after retirement, they relocated to Williamsburg, VA where she was active as a volunteer at Colonial Williamsburg, participated in the Christopher Wren Life-Long Learning Program and was a member of the Ford’s Colony Theater Club. In both locations she was very active in church work.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three sisters and one brother; Adele Smith of Powder Springs, GA, Katherine Fritz and Thomas Litterer of Philadelphia, PA and Charlotte Litterer of Williamsburg, VA. She is also survived by three step-sons, Edward Nelson of Windsor, CT, William Nelson of Amsterdam, NY, and Christopher Nelson of Garrison, NY, along with seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg, 23188 on Saturday, August 24th at 2:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Science-First Church, 620 Jamestown Rd, Williamsburg, VA 23185.
