Obituary of Glenn Wesley Winstead Sr.

Glenn Winstead Sr., many of whom knew him as “Red,” passed away peacefully at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center on January 20, 2021. Glenn was born on January 17, 1929 in Nash County, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Eula Winstead; sisters, Jean Bryan and Magdalene Drake; beloved wife, Betty Winstead; and youngest daughter, Susan Lawson. Glenn was a high school graduate and served in the United States Army during the Korean War, from December 8, 1950 to December 2, 1952, when he was discharged honorably. Glenn celebrated 50 years of service, under the authorization of the Department of Defense, on October 5, 2003. He later continued contract work with the government. Glenn very much enjoyed his position as an instructor and devoted to the individuals he trained. He rarely if ever, missed a day of work. Glenn is survived by his twin daughters, Lynn Winstead, Dorothy Wing and husband Richard; son, Wes Winstead; son-in-law, Ken Lawson; nephews, George Mahone Jr. and wife Renee, Bob Bryan and wife Barbara; and niece, Debbie Holland and husband Rick and their families. Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren, Sam Wing, Brittany Lawson, Karen Griffin, and Mikey Israel. Visitation will be held on February 1, 2021 at 6:00 pm at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, Virginia. A Graveside Service will be held on February 2, 2021 at 2:00 pm at Cedar Grove Cemetery, 809 South Henry Street, Williamsburg, Virginia and officiated by Scott Salsman from James River Baptist Church.
