

Harry A. Gambrell, better known as “Mr. Harry” went to be with our Lord at the age of 87. He passed away peacefully on November 25, 2014 in his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Loyall, Kentucky on May 2, 1927 and previously deceased by William and Nora Gambrel. He was a star basketball player in High School. Instead of pursuing a basketball career, he chose to serve his Country in the US Navy during WWII. He served on the Monongahela as a Seaman First Class and was awarded a Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
On October 24, he celebrated 68 years of marriage with Norma Ailene Lee. They relocated to Virginia with A&P Tea Company. He retired from Dow Badische/BASF but the most meaningful and rewarding occupation was safely escorting hundreds of WJCC children to school for more than 20 years.
He enjoyed fishing, watching college football & basketball, spending time with his family, supporting his children's and grandchildren's school activities and sporting events. He enjoyed greeting as many people as possible after Sunday Worship Services at Williamsburg Christian Church where he was an active member for 49 years.
He is survived by his son, Harry L. Gambrell of Arizona, daughters, Judy G. Taylor (Robert) of North Carolina, Janie G. Heishman (Charlie), Tammy G. Kennedy (Jim) and Susie G. Waltrip (Alvin) all of Williamsburg. His grandchildren, Mike, Robb (Sarah) & Jeff Gambrell, Robin & David (Bethany) Taylor, Stephanie Lanier, Adam (Beth) Heishman, Casey (Andy) Luders, Stoney & Logan Heishman, Jeremy Kennedy, Danny (Erin) & Brad Waltrip and Andrea (Forrest) Goalder. Great-grandchildren Dakota Meyer, Lola & Kia Gambrell, Colby, Mack & Levi Taylor, Matt, Noah & Aaron Luders, Allie Heishman, Gabriel & Carson Waltrip. Brothers, Herbert, A.T., Paul and Joe Gambrell, all of Kentucky.
He is previously deceased by siblings, William Gambrel, Edna Caudill, Jessie Garrett, Anna Selby, Peggy Mahler, Doris Hochheim, Jean Thomas and Myra Terry. Great-granddaughter, Genevieve Waltrip.
Visiting will take place on Sunday, November 30 from 4-7pm at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, VA 23188. A service will be held on Monday, December 1 at 11am, at Williamsburg Christian Church, 200 John Tyler Ln., Williamsburg, VA 23185.
