Helen Marie Markle

Helen Marie “McTague” Markle passed peacefully into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior surrounded by her family on Saturday, May 14, 2016. Helen was the daughter of James A. and Reba C. “Pettitt” McTague, born June 15, 1933 in Millville, NJ. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 54 years, James R. Markle, Sr.; her parents and brother, Edward W. McTague; her grandsons, A.J. Markle and Jake Markle. Helen is survived by her children, James R., Jr. (Carolyn), Alice Twiford (Les), Jennifer Stouter, and David (Judy); her granddaughters, Billie Blessing, Vanessa Belcher, Sara Sheppard, Katherine Twiford, Devynn Markle , Madison Markle, Lela Graf and eight great-grandchildren.

Helen lived in York, PA from 1949 to 2007. She graduated as Salutatorian from William Penn Senior High School in 1950. Helen was a member of the National Honor Society and winner of numerous awards. She graduated with a degree in education from Millersville State College and went on to teach for 32 years in the York Suburban Public School System. She was a much loved teacher of multiple generations of students. Musically talented, Helen sang with the church choir of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, directed the children’s choir and served as a deacon of the church. She frequently served as accompanist for school musicals as well. Helen was also a member of the White Rose Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in York, PA.

Helen moved to Williamsburg, VA in 2007, where she was involved with her Tuesday “Lunch Bunch” and enjoyed lots of family time with her two daughters and three of her granddaughters. She loved to read, garden, travel and walk her dog, Ollie. For the last few years of her life, Helen was well cared for by the staff at Trinity Assisted Living. A memorial reception is planned for 4:00 pm Monday, May 16th at Nelsen Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Her cremains will be interred next to her husband in Prospect Hill Cemetery in York, PA at a later date. Online condolences for the family may be expressed at www.NelsenCares.com
