She was the youngest of seven children born in Gibsonville, N.C. to Joseph A. and Sallie M. Davidson. She grew up in Greensboro, N.C. and taught in the public schools there for many years. She was married to Richard E. Wharton, who predeceased her in 1980.
Surviving are her daughter Kathleen W. Kane (Kay) and her husband John of Williamsburg; nephew Russell Campbell Jr. and his wife Patricia of Gettysburg, Pa.; and great-nephew Bradford W. Campbell and his family of York, Pa.
She moved to Virginia and the Landing in 1990 with her older sister Mildred. The two of them made many wonderful new friends and eagerly joined in community activities. And she loved being in Williamsburg with Kay and John nearby.
The family wishes to thank the management and staff of Williamsburg Landing, especially the doctors, nurses, and aides at Woodhaven, where she received wonderful care throughout her eleven years there. The expressions of love and affection for her from so many at the Landing, especially those who remember how she cared for her sister, until Mildred’s death in 2009, have been deeply moving.
A private service and burial will be held in Greensboro, N.C. Nelsen Funeral Home of Williamsburg and Forbis and Dick Funeral Services of Greensboro are handling arrangements. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers a donation may be made to a local charity of one’s choice.
