He was born July 25, 1955 in Newport News, VA, the eldest son of Robert A. and Karen L. Hughes. He grew up in Hampton and was a graduate of Hampton High School.
Hurley was a master carpenter and custom builder for 50 years. He was known for his craftsmanship and was an artist in his own right who loved his work and always had a unique vision for what he was building - whether it be a home or a rocking horse, and he always achieved it. He loved sailing and being on the water, especially anywhere on the Hampton Roads or the Outer Banks. He was an honorable gentleman and a lovable character who brought great joy and humor to his family and many friends. He will always be loved and never forgotten. As much as he will be missed, we take great comfort in knowing Hurley is at peace and surrounded by light.
Hurley is survived by his loved and loving partner of 7 years, Lael Davis White; his mother, Karen Hughes; sisters, Laurie Gardner and Tracy Patteson-Stewart (Jamie); niece, Ashley Ritchie; and nephew, John L. Patteson II. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Hughes; birth mother, Margaret (Peggy) Hughes; sister, Terry K. Hughes; and brother, Roy Clyde Hughes II.
In lieu of a funeral, the family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.
Donations in his memory may be made to a local food bank or a favorite charity of your choice.
