May 2, 1954 – November 5, 2025
Iris Chaffin Street, 71, of Williamsburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025 — the same day she and her beloved husband, John, celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary.
Born in Winter Haven, Florida, on May 2, 1954, Iris spent her early childhood in St. Petersburg, Florida, before moving to Richlands, Virginia, as a freshman in high school. It was there that she met John Street, the love of her life, beginning a partnership that would span more than five decades of laughter, devotion, and friendship.
She graduated from Richlands High School in 1972. After high school, Iris and John returned to Florida to attend Florida State University, where she studied Forms of Government. Following her studies, they briefly returned to their hometown, where Iris worked as a substitute teacher before settling in Williamsburg later that year.
Iris dedicated her life to helping others. She began her career as a Social Worker for King and Queen County, where her compassion and tireless care touched countless families and children. In 1983, she joined James City County, continuing her mission to support and uplift others until her retirement in 2005. Her calling to serve did not end there — Iris later worked as a mediator for fair housing with the State of Virginia, ensuring fairness and dignity for all until her second retirement in 2020.
In 1984, Iris and John welcomed their son, Jordan, who brought immense joy to their lives and completed their beautiful family.
Those who knew Iris will remember her warm and caring spirit, her radiant smile, and her ability to make everyone feel valued. She was an extraordinary cook, a lover of books, and a talented crafter who poured love into everything she created. Iris also loved to shop — delighting in finding special things and sharing them with others. Above all, she cherished the time spent with her family and close friends, who meant the world to her.
Iris was preceded in death by her mother, Nancy Cyphers; her stepfather, Larry Cyphers; and her father, Arlon Chaffin.
She is survived by her devoted husband, John Street; her loving son, Jordan Street; her twin sister, Alice Marcrum; sister Tasha Looney; her brothers-in-law James Strouth and Jeff Strouth; her sister-in-law, Bernetta Reynolds; her uncle, Ben Crum; her aunt Mary Sue Webb; her nieces, Jessica Marcrum, Courtney Finley, Monica Bosch, and Sarah Johnsson; her nephews, Nick Looney, Jake Looney, Alex Marcrum, and Zachary Strouth; special friends Mary Hubbard, Stephanie Gallas, Patti Pickering, Sheelah Sodhi, and Karen Asaro; along with a host of friends and loved ones who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on January 16th, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Nelsen Funeral Home in Williamsburg, VA.
She made the world a gentler place, just by being in it.
