Jack was always happy he had a smile and a sparkle in his eye and a joke to make you smile. He never had a bad thing to say about anyone.  He always recognized Duvall as soon as he walked in the room.  Jack you will be in our memories forever. Ms. Peggy we are so sorry for your loss. Grandpa was a great man, I have thousands of memories wether they come from bath county, or at the house on countless thanksgivings and Christmas eves, grandpa was always a pleasure to be around.  And man could he tell a story the one that sticks out to me is yet another hunting story about the deer that came up and licked the barrel of his gun, made me laugh, still to this day I can close my eyes and imagine this deer walking up and licking the barrel...... Grandpa you will be greatly missed, we love you!!

Lois,Steve,Janet,Penny and Wendy...I have grown into your family for the last 17 years and adored me some "Popeye Jack". I enjoyed all the drop bys to the office when Jack and PaPa Pete would visit. I would always have a laugh and hear a story about what had happened and of course what was going to happen in a joke or a true story. The memories that was given to me by Jack will always be in my heart. Lois...Thank you for all your visits to the office and the days and hours of entertainment at your home you and Jack have given to me. Steve,Janet,Penny and Wendy THANKS for letting me be the "adopted child" into your family. Love you all!

So many memories of my Dad live on in my heart.  Trips to Grandmas house at Christmas,Dad driving through the snow with kids in the backseat screaming and laughing.  Riding on the giant seesaw in the backyard that Dad built by his hands. Playing card in the kitchen til late at night.  Listening to all of his wonderful stories.  Him walking me down the aisle on my wedding day.  Being there for the birth of my children.  A big part of you lives on in my heart forever.

I have had the good fortune of knowing Jack for 14 years and the pleasure to be in his family for 13. From the moment I met him, he had a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face. There are so many stories of his that I haven't heard but the two that stand out are the dog peaking from behind the tree and the fox of a different color.  Sitting out in his back yard I thought I'd fall of my chair laughing! I think it was a blue fox...Jack insisted so I'm sure it was true. And, for the dog, it wasn't just a story, but an animated story of Jack acting out the part of that dog peaking from behind the tree.  He was a wonderful man to my kids and grandkids...fond memories there. Most of all, he was a very kind, warm and loving father-in-law, all the days that I have known him. It was that twinkle in his eye and smile on his face that got you every time.

I was pretty young when Popeye got sick, but I have memories of him always laughing and telling his stories.  My parents have told me how he would ride me piggyback around his house and get down in the floor to play with Taylor and I when we were little.  I will miss him, but I will never forget him...I love you Popeye Jack

I will remember Jack for always being a kind and funny man. When I was younger and into racing speed boats, he and Lois' dad came down to the river one day and asked me to take them for a ride in my boat, and he wanted to go FAST !  It stuck with me all these years how he had shown such an interest in the things other people were involved in and how he told the story of he and PaPaPete riding down the Chickahominy in my boat.   Jack always treated me as more of a son than a son-in-law and I will always remember him for stories and love for his family.

Like most kids, I grew up idolizing my dad. He seemed bigger than life to me then, and he still remains my hero.  I have memories of trips to Nags Head, trips fishing and crabbing with dad and the rest of the family, dad making the best fried potatoes for breakfast on weekends and him being the dad who came to the pool next to the house and did flips and cannonballs off the diving board.  Dad was a hardworking man who only missed a day of work if he was in the hospital.  He instilled in us kids to give 100 percent in everything we do.  Dad always had a great sense of humor and rarely said a cross word. He truly made everyone around him a happier person. He and mom taught us that family comes first and what love really means.  What a great example of a devoted, loving couple they are.  Though he was taken from us all too soon, he will forever live on in my heart. I thank him, and mom for making me the person that I am today and I am proud to call him my Dad, my hero.

It is a rare individual who can be genuinely liked by everyone they meet. Jack, it was an honor to have known you and your kindness.

I remember my Dad for many things,he taught me to play baseball, he gave me a shared experience of a lifetime with our Bath County adventures, but most of all he taught me the true meaning of being a man, a husband, grandfather and great grandfather, this was his greatest gift off all to me. Dad was truly a great man in every sense of the word. Dad was blessed with a wife who was always there when he needed her most, what a perfect couple. Dad you were with us for such a long time, thank you for every moment, but you are a man who has earned his rest, tell your yarns in  Heaven, because someone will tell one of your tales here on earth almost every day. You will truly live on not only with your family and friends but to all you came in contact  with,you made this world a much better place to live in, WHAT A LEGACY WHAT A MAN. Love, your son Steve

I can remember all the times we spent together..kicking you out of the bed because I wanted to have a sleepover with Nannie, you cooking the BEST grits ever for breakfast..working outside in the garden, etc. You were a great grandfather and an even better person and I will miss you sorely, however I know you are where is best for you now. I love you Popeye Jack!!!

Memories of my dad: walking to the end of the road to meet my dad after work....eating his hot left over snack cakes he would leave in his lunch box after work.... riding with him to Mcknowns grocery so he could by a pack of Redman and him buying me a grape Nehi...sitting watching him build our deck and meeating peaches...I swear I watched everything the man did and wanted to be like him...thank you dad for everything...I love you ...Wendy

Dear Lois and family,  what a wonderful tribute you had for Uncle Jack yesterday. The memorial service was very touching with your longtime pastor and friend, and of course it would not be complete without Uncle Jim's words of his special relationship with Uncle Jack.  The release of the doves at the graveside was something we had never seen done and again very touching.  The picnic was a wonderful celebration of Uncle Jack's life. We at the Denbigh Insurance Agency mourn the loss of our long-term client and friend Jack. We send our best wishes to the family and to Lois - the kind of lady we just want to keep for ourselves. Red Man, Long Tom, Bath County are are few words that are dear to my heart when thinking back over what uncle Jack meant to me. A master story teller, he always had a smile on his face. Although his kids may disagree, I never heard him raise his voice, never saw him angry. Jack Hughes was a conerstone of the Hughes family, he represented everything that was great about being a Hughes. Lois, we love you and are all raised up by the strength you have so bravely shown over the past couple of years. Janet, Steve, Penny "Pum" and Wendy you and your families are in our hearts.

Really dont know where to begin. I use to look forward to summer time because I knew I would be spending it at my favorite sunt and uncles-Lois an Jack's. I will forever cherish my precious memories!!! Rest In Paradise Jack-you will be greatly missed. Until we meet again!  Love ya!!!
