Janet Palen McConaughy

She was born April 28, 1930 in Syracuse, NY and was preceded in death by her parents, John and Janet Palen; her brother, John Palen; and her son, Phillip Osborne McConaughy. She is survived by Donald Leigh McConaughy, her husband of 74 years; their children, Daniel McConaughy (Lori), David McConaughy (Susan) and Dorothy Noble (John); their grandchildren, Jessica McConaughy (Doug), Andrew Noble, Elizabeth Noble Lopresti (Matt), Rachel McConaughy and Hannah McConaughy; and their great-granddaughter, Ella Rose McConaughy, daughter of Jessica.

Janet attended elementary to high school in Syracuse and graduated from Syracuse University with honors in 1952 with a BS in Botany. When her husband graduated from the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University, they moved to Newport, Rhode Island while he served as an officer in the Navy. After 4 years, they moved to South Carolina, living in Georgetown, Newberry and, for over 40 years, in Summerville. She earned a master’s degree in education at the Citadel, in Charleston, and taught school in Summerville for 20 years. Upon retiring, she pursued a career as a watercolor painter for many years. In addition to her painting, she enjoyed concerts and theater, archaeology and history, and traveling, especially to visit her children and tour the National Parks.

She and Donald moved to Patriots Colony in 2007, where they participated in many activities and were members of Hickory Neck Episcopal Church in Toano.

A memorial service and reception will be held at Patriots Colony at a future date.

She will be interred in Stone Ridge, NY, with her parents and ancestors.
