Janice was born on July 27, 1938, in Brooklyn, New York, to Kenneth Knight and Viola E. Knight. Later in her life, her mother married Henry Toler, who became an important part of her family during her senior years.
Janice was known above all else for her joyful spirit. She was funny, warm, and endlessly generous, with a gift for making people feel seen, celebrated, and loved. She was her family’s biggest cheerleader, offering encouragement freely and showing up with enthusiasm, pride, and unwavering support.
Janice is survived by her devoted husband, Jose Reyes Lebron, with whom she shared a rare and beautiful love. Their marriage, which spanned many decades, was marked by deep devotion, partnership, and mutual respect. Together they built a life rooted in family, faith, laughter, and steadfast commitment, and the love they shared was evident to all who knew them.
She is also survived by her children, Kathleen Lebron Wilson, Jose Reyes Lebron Jr., and Janice Carol Lebron, whose marriages brought into her life the love of Delano Wilson and Anthony Alston. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Cynthia Wilson and Jasmin Stephens, whose marriage to Benjamin Stephens further expanded her family and brought her great joy.
Janice is also survived by her siblings, Kenneth Knight, who played an essential role in her life and became a steady, guiding presence—often serving as the glue that held the family together—and her baby sister, Kay Scott, whom Janice loved dearly.
Janice was extremely intelligent and carried a lifelong hunger for learning. She attended Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, New York—New York City’s first public coeducational liberal arts college—and remained curious about the world long after her formal education ended. She was especially passionate about religious studies, engaging thoughtfully with scripture and faith traditions with both reverence and curiosity.
She spent her career as a Mental Health Technician at Kings Park Psychiatric Center in Kings Park, New York, where her compassion, patience, and genuine respect for others naturally extended into her work. Janice met people exactly where they were, offering acceptance without judgment and kindness without condition.
Her faith was not only spoken about—it was lived. A devoted member of St. Benedict Catholic Church in Crystal River, Florida, Janice approached her spirituality with openness, depth, and joy. Her faith informed how she loved, how she welcomed others, and how she made sense of the world, while always leaving room for questions, reflection, and conversation.
Janice enjoyed crocheting and playing Scrabble, and she never shied away from a spirited (and often humorous) relationship with politics—engaging thoughtfully, passionately, and sometimes exasperatedly, always with conviction and curiosity. She was happiest when surrounded by family, good food, friends, and butterflies—moments of beauty, laughter, and connection that reflected how she lived.
Her memorial service will be held on December 30th at noon at Saint Bede Catholic Church, 3686 Ironbound Rd, Williamsburg, VA 23188, with interment following at Williamsburg Memorial Park Cemetery, 130 King William Dr, Williamsburg, VA 23188.
