Jere Michael Long

March 22, 1940December 1, 2020

Jere Michael Long, 80, of Williamsburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully in his home on December 1, 2020 surrounded by his wife and children.

Jere was born on March 22, 1940 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He is preceded in death by his father, Gervase Francis Long; mother, Ava Marie Huber Long; and his brother, Joseph Francis Long.

Jere was a dedicated husband to his wife Charma Krailing Long for 59 years. A loving father to Michael and Julie; father-in-law to Tracy and Darren and adoring grandfather to Elizabeth (Addison), Caroline, Elliott (Kathryn), Lydia and Harrison. He was a devoted brother to his sister, Joan Long Mahan.

Jere enjoyed a successful career for 40 years with the JCPenney Company. Jere and Charma moved several times during his career and finally settled in Williamsburg, Virginia after retirement in 1998. He made many lifelong friends throughout his career. In retirement, Jere was active in his church, St. Olaf, and volunteered various ways in his community. He was a dedicated member of his home owner’s association for over 18 years and held many positions on the board.

It is not easy to put in to words the man that Jere was. He was a husband, father, grandfather and friend who was always ready to help out with words of wisdom, a simple favor or just to listen. Those that were lucky enough to know him well, loved him. His great sense of humor, generosity and honesty will be missed but not forgotten.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday December 12, 2020 at 12:00 pm at St. Olaf Catholic Church, 104 Norge Lane, Williamsburg, VA 23188. We request that all attending wear masks for the service. Social distancing will be required. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Olaf Church Building Fund. Online condolences may be shared at

Dear Charma,
I am so sad to hear of the loss of your sweet husband, Jere.I had always enjoyed seeing you both in JCP. You both brightened my day.
When you would come in to shop, Jere would always “lose” you, but he would eventually find you shopping in Sephora.
I know that Jere is greatly missed.
Remembering you both,
Kathy Mason

I was very sad to read of the death of your husband Jere. We did not know either of you particularly well but greatly enjoyed seeing you every Sunday at Saint Olaf, especially in the old church. Sue and I both wish you the very best at this sad time in your life. God bless you. Mike and Sue Danehy.

I haven't seen Jerry for a long time. I don't remember him at the reunions. We went through grade school and high school, together. I do remember that Jerry was a good friend and classmate. We had some good times.
I offer my condolences to his wife, Charma and to the children and grandchildren.

My dearest Charma and family,

I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved husband, father and grandfather. Jere was a man of God and a man of honor. He loved his family with all his heart and especially his sweet Charma. He was a “doer” and love for him was a verb. He showed his love with many acts of kindness. I will always remember Jere’s dry humor, his intelligence and his interest and caring for his fellow man.
Jere will be missed by so many loved ones, and he will always be in our hearts.

With love and deepest sympathy,

Pam Berry

Dear Long Family,

Words cannot describe how saddened we are about Jere's passing. Jere and Charma are not just our closest neighbors, but really are our family away from Canada.

From the the first time we met in 2004 when we were building our house, I knew that we were going to be lucky to have such great neighbors across the street. I did not know then how we would become so much more than that. I am going to miss looking over to see if Jere was sitting at his desk in his study, when I walked by. I am going to miss our special door knock - he knows. I am going to miss our countless chats in the cul-de-sac about the neighborhood, our families, kids, landscaping, the news, good shows on Netflix, etc etc etc. There was never a shortage of things to discuss!

Most of all I am just going to miss my dear friend. We were always there for each other and its just not going to be the same. Mostly though, I really feel so so blessed to have had you in our life for all our years in Wexford Hills.

Love, The Peters Family xox

Dear Charma and family,

Our family is heartbroken over Jere’s passing. As neighbors, since 2007, we have been blessed to know you both so well. It has been an honor to know and love Jere.

He has been there for our family in such incredible ways during some difficult times that made all the difference! He showed us what to means to be a true and loyal friend. His compassionate ways were such an inspiration to me. My children consider you all their third set of grandparents. How very lucky they are! My youngest son felt particularly close to Jere. The support Jere has given to him has made a lifelong impact! We are forever grateful to have known and loved Jere. His wonderful personality and humor will never be forgotten.

I miss you dear Jere. We love you so much! Rest In Peace with God’s love surrounding you- God bless you.
Thank you for everything!!!!

Big big hugs Charma - we will be here to support and love you as always! Our deepest sympathies, the Findlay’s

Jerre Long
Jerre Long was my neighbor since 2004. Tony and I respected Jerre and looked to him for advice and opinion. I could always tell Jerre would think before he spoke. He always chose his words well as to not offend anyone. Jerre was Mr. Wexford Hills. He cared about our community and was so active making sure Wexford Hills continued being a safe and beautiful place to live.
Jerre had a playful kind manner. He dressed up for every Halloween Party. I especially liked when he was a biker with long black hair.
I truly believe Jerre’s determination and strength was admired and patterned by those he touched.

My Brother and good Friend Jere Long
We became close in our Golden Years, and how wonderful they have been. Having the friendship of so many people in your lifetime have been so important to you.
The love you have had for Charma and your children always made
you tell me how good the Lord has been in our lives.
As a fellow member of Bill W. and sharing our love for the Lord at
St. Olaf, you will truly be missed. I love you Jere and may the good
Lord take you and hold you in his arms.......Van
