JoAnn was born on November 15, 1929 in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. She was the youngest of seven children. As a young woman, she moved to Cleveland, Ohio where she worked as an administrative assistant, and did part-time modeling. She met her husband Jim and married in 1950. Jim‘s job at NASA brought them to Williamsburg, Virginia in 1972 where they raised their two children Paul and Laura.
JoAnn was an avid tennis player, and eventually became a beloved instructor. She loved nothing more than boating on the York River with family and vacationing in the Outer Banks. When she no longer could teach tennis, JoAnn transitioned to a water aerobics instructor, where she became a relentless advocate for MS patients. JoAnn was still teaching at 83 when she had her first stroke and moved to Spring Arbor.
JoAnn is preceded in death by her six siblings, husband Jim, and daughter Laura. She is survived by her son, Paul and wife Lynne of Sugar Land Texas; granddaughter, Kelly of Seattle, Washington; and grandson, Jimmy of Austin, Texas.
The family would like to thank the staff at Spring Arbor for the wonderful care they gave JoAnn the past 11 years, as well as the team from Sentara Hospice.
The family will hold a private graveside service at Williamsburg Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MS Society in JoAnn’s name.
