Joyce Nixon Herrmann, 82, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, December 5, 2022. She was with her husband of sixty years, John Anthony (“Tony”) Herrmann, Jr. and their daughter, Jill Herrmann Mulhall of Richmond.
Joyce was born on September 5, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois. She was the second of three children of Robert and Dorothy (Romp) Nixon, and grew up in Grosse Pointe, Michigan with her older sister Judy and younger brother Bob. In 1957 she went on a first date with Tony Herrmann, and they were inseparable from that moment forward. Joyce attended Northwestern University and after college, married Tony and raised a son, John, and a daughter, Jill.
After living years in Michigan, New York and Illinois, Joyce and Tony settled in Williamsburg in 2002. Joyce entered the professional workforce at age 65 working at the local Williams-Sonoma in Williamsburg. Despite her late entry, Joyce knew how a great kitchen worked and provided her customers with compelling insight into the best-suited products, frequently being awarded High Sales or Highest Earner awards.
One of Joyce’s greatest joys was doting on her grandchildren, Katie, Jack, Olivia and John Patrick, and step-grandchildren Kyle and Ryan. She spent hours in the kitchen teaching her grandkids her baking secrets and preparing home-cooked meals for family and friends. She was a beloved mother and grandmother and a wonderful friend and role model for all who knew her.
There will be a service on Monday, December 12 at 11:00 a.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, with a reception to follow at Paul’s Deli at 4345 New Town Avenue. In lieu of flowers, Joyce’s family has asked mourners to make charitable donations in her memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Blvd, Staten Island, NY 10306 (www.t2t.org).
