Kathleen “Kathy” Miller Hornung of Williamsburg, Virginia died on September 30, 2013. Kathy was born on March 4, 1944 in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, the second child of C. William and Bertha Miller. She received a Bachelor of Science, Cum Laude, receiving the Sister Josephine Cavanagh Medal for Excellence in Nursing from St. Joseph’s College in Emmitsburg, Maryland. She went on to complete a Master of Science degree in psychiatric mental health nursing from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Kathy completed an Executive Fellowship Program in Healthcare Information Technology from the University of Alabama, Birmingham. On completing her education, Kathy began her career as the youngest Assistant Director of Nurses in Fairfax County, Virginia, specializing in psychiatric nursing and establishing the first drug rehabilitation program in the state. While taking a number of years off from work to raise her two children, she managed to teach nursing at Marymount University in Northern Virginia. After completing a computer curriculum Kathy began a successful career in Medical Information Systems. She became Senior Vice President of Libra Health Technology, which pioneered integration of hospital information systems. Kathy subsequently became a Business Development Manager in the Medical Products Group of the Hewlett Packard Company. Her last business venture was as the Director of the Department of Informatics at Inova Health System in Fairfax County, Virginia. After spending 29 years living in Alexandria, Burke and Reston, Virginia, Kathy retired with her husband John to Williamsburg in 1997. During her time in Williamsburg, Kathy was very active in the community. She was a member of the Green Spring Garden Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution, served as a volunteer for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, and was on the Community for the Beautification of Jamestown for the 400th anniversary of its founding. Kathy was an avid gardener and loved conducting genealogy research for her family as well as others. She enjoyed playing bridge and socializing with her many friends. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Kathy was preceded in death by her father, C. William Miller; mother, Bertha Miller; and brother, Ronald W. Miller. She is survived by John, her husband of forty five years; son, J. Andrew Hornung and his wife Kati of Richmond, Virginia; daughter, Julie Hornung Knox and her husband Anders of Mill Valley, California; four granddaughters, Ani and Zoe Hornung, and Kathleen “Kate” and Mary Knox; and two sisters, Mary Barbuto of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania and Christina Miller of Williamsport, Pennsylvania. A celebration of Kathy’s life will be held at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, Virginia, at 10:00 AM on October 3, 2013. A private interment will be held at the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.
