Our family really appreciates all of the hearfelt condolences and memories about my brother, Larry. Several memories that have been shared described Larry as a very kind, caring and supportive soul who wanted to be a mentor to everyone, especially his students. He could see what talent and potential his students had. God now has an assignment in Heaven for Larry to fulfill. And I feel no doubt he will rise to the challenge! Love and miss you, brother!

I would lile to share condolences with Larry's family and friends. I taught art alongside Larry for 10+ years at Western Branch High. He was an amazing mentor and person.  I was always amazed by the many talents he had. He will be greatly missed!

Larry Knight was my art teacher at HRA  for my senior year in 1980. He was a patient and knowledgeable teacher, and had a lovely, gentle spirit. We really loved him.

Everyone at Hampton Roads Academy loved Mr. Knight.  He was always so kind and supportive of everyone in art class.  I learned more about drawing, painting and printmaking from Mr. Knight than I have ever learned from any art professor.  He was multi-talented in so many areas of life - he even coached track.  I went on to major in Studio Art in college because I was so inspired by Mr. Knight.

Thank you for many wonderful memories and for everything you patiently taught all of us at HRA.  We will never forget you, Mr. Knight!  You will be greatly missed.

Larry (Mr. Knight) was my art teacher at HRA. He introduced me to ceramics and printmaking using very good materials and equipment. He was very genuine and kind.  I ended up becoming an art major, an art teacher, and worked extensively in ceramics as a maker and author later in life. It says a lot about Larry when I reflect back on how much my high school art experiences had such a significant influence in my life. His memory lives on.  - AB


Larry ("Coach Knight") was treasured as my first track and cross country coach, as well as my art teacher, at Hampton Roads Academy.   Though I graduated in 1986, I and many others have paintings and sculpture that Larry helped us craft, many years ago.  He was kind and encouraging.  He changed lives.  He will be missed.

So very saddened to hear of Mr. Knights' passing...As an art student & track assistant of his, I was pushed to achieve the intended goal, encouraged to try my best & congratulated on success, or lack thereof,  with pointers on how to do better next time...I truly believe that the person I am today was greatly influenced by his kindness, insight & support...He was a mentor & a friend that I am honored to have had in my life!! Please know your family is in my heart & prayers.....until we meet again, Mr Knight

I took several art classes from Mr. Knight during my years at HRA.  I did not have much talent, but he encouraged me to make the most of my abilities.  I have fond memories of my independent study class in the Art Room during my senior year (1983-84), working on paintings while Mr. Knight made me listen to country music (which I now love), and talked to me about many different things.  He was one of those special teachers who touches the lives of students and makes a difference.  It has been many years since I painted anything other than a room in my house, but I will never forget Mr. Knight (Coach Knight to most).  I am very sorry for your loss.

Coach Knight was my Cross Country (2 years) and Track (5 years) coach at HRA.  He built a wonderful Track program there that started out running in the mud.  I also coached Track at HRA for four years and tried to model my coaching style after his.  Push when necessary.  Praise as much as possible.  I was so, so sorry to see his obituary in the paper this weekend.   I will not be able to attend the memorial service but please know that he is on my heart and my mind at this time. Sad to hear of Coach Knight’s passing.   He was always an inspiration in the class and on the field.  I still remember his art class, and his passion for running.

He made a difference in so many lives!  It's been many years since our paths crossed in Bruton Park but the many wonderful childhood memories are still clear to me.  May he rest in peace.
