

Les Twiford passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on May 2, 2017, at the Hospice House of Williamsburg. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff and volunteers for their compassion and excellent care during his stay.
Les was born to Lester D., Sr. and Lillian Virginia Twiford on August 13, 1937 in Norfolk, VA. Les graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk and received a scholarship to attend Michigan State University. He loved to tell people he played in the Rose Bowl – 3rd snare drum. Les joined the Army in 1956 and rose through the ranks serving as company clerk, platoon sergeant, drill sergeant and First Sergeant to become one of the first Command Sergeant Majors in the Army in 1980. During his 26 years of service, CSM Twiford served tours in Vietnam, Germany (4) and the United States. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medals, Joint Service Medal, Army Commendation Medals, Good Conduct Medal, 7th award, National Defense Service Medal, Drill Sergeant Badge, and Parachutist’s Badge.
After retiring from the Army, CSM Twiford spent another 15 years in Civil Service, for a total of 41 years of Federal service. In his retirement, he became a professional calligrapher, teaching hundreds of students the art of beautiful writing. He served as president of IAMPETH, the International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting in 1999-2000.
CSM Twiford is survived by his wife of 35 years, Alice Twiford, and their daughter, Katherine Twiford, as well as his son Edward Twiford and daughter, Zahra Twiford.
Nelsen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A visitation will be held from 5:30pm to 7:30pm followed by a memorial service at 7:30pm on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at the Funeral Home located at 3758 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, VA. CSM Twiford fought a lengthy battle with the complications from esophageal cancer. The family requests memorial gifts should be made to the American Cancer Society.
