Obituary of Luis Felipe Guerra Sr.

IN THE CARE OF

Nelsen Williamsburg

Luis Felipe Guerra Sr. passed away peacefully on Friday, July 30, 2021, in his home in Williamsburg, VA surrounded by his family. He was born September 26, 1933, in Mayaguez, PR where he lived most of his early childhood. Later, his family moved to Ocean Park, San Juan, where his love for the ocean blossomed. As a young adult, he studied in Miami to become a cameraman and returned to Puerto Rico and worked for Telemundo TV in San Juan and earned many accolades for his talent. Years later he transferred to WTSJ Channel 18 where he worked his way up to Programming Director. He was very proud of the fact that a certain A-celebrity golfer would always request him whenever he played in Puerto Rico. An unfortunate work accident ended his career in TV and left him in traction for over 12 months. Always the hardworking man that he was, he ventured into entrepreneurship as a real estate developer, then as a “cash and carry” delivery service, and finally a Roofing Company before moving to VA, USA. On September 14, 1979, he moved his family from Puerto Rico to Dale City, VA seeking a better life for his family. He worked various jobs to support his family one of which was as a security guard at a Fair Oaks Dodge and where he decided he wanted to pursue car sales. He earned a title as one of the top 10 Dodge Pickup Trucks Salesman of Virginia for many years of which he and his family were very proud of. Luis met the love of his life at a mutual friend’s party where he met a tall leggy Pan Am flight attendant named Provi and the love story, the “gang” and the legacy began. Luis devoted his life to his wife and seven children. There wasn’t anything in the world that he loved more than to have gatherings with his family and friends. Luis also was very devoted to teaching his children to speak English. The children sat in the living room with him every night and listened to English learning records. These lessons taught them to speak English in less than 6 months. In the 80’s, the family adopted a chow-chow dog they named Ewok that became Luis’ best buddy and followed him everywhere. The family laughed at the “Mary Jane candy” treats he would give the dog after a long day’s work and relaxing on his favorite chair. A particular story to share is when Luis’ sweet-tooth niece came to visit and unknowingly proceeded to eat Ewok’s delicious sweet treats. Luis frantically looked for the Mary Janes when finally, his niece confessed to the treat’s demise. Needless to say, the treats were then hidden from her and anyone else at the house. Luis became an avid football fan when his youngest son began playing the sport from pee wee all the way through to the University of Maryland (Terrapins) and shared a love for the Washington Redskins. He spent many seasons watching games alongside his wife, children, and later grandchildren, and became a weekend event. He and his family also shared a passion for other sports such as boxing and tennis. He wasn’t only a loving father to his children but also a friend and mentor. Luis was considered by many as a hardworking individual with strong religious faith and high moral values which he instilled in his family. He taught them to never give up and move forward, no matter what life throws at them. He laughed hysterically at his own silly jokes and his infectious laugh was undeniable. REST IN PEACE LUIS FELIPE. HUSBAND, FATHER, BROTHER AND FRIEND. YOU WILL BE MISSED BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN. Luis is survived by his wife of, just celebrated, 63 years, Providencia Thillet de Guerra; sons, Luis Jr, Carlos (Terri), and Felix; daughters, Ana and Teresa Adderty (Paul); other family members, Michael Steele (Cindy) and Teresita Martin; grandchildren, Natalia Martin, Ashley Guerra, CJ Guerra, Katie Guerra, Julio Guerra, Walter Windish III, Jason Adderty, Vanessa Adderty, Roman Guerra and Maria Guerra. The family wishes to thank the staff of Devine Homecare, Angie Cintron, who was Dad’s aide since March for all her hard work and sincere dedication in taking care of him.
