She was born on January 14, 1940 to Dorotea Cantu Garcia and Marcelo Garica in Mercedes, Texas. Her humble childhood was the foundation for a life filled with joy, strength, fun, and love. Her drive and fortitude propelled her to attend nursing school setting the stage for a life she always dreamed of.
Maria married Charles "Bud" Edwin Smith and built a life filled with grace, humor, compassion and love. Maria boldly took to this life and delighted in traveling and experiencing the world all while being perfectly accessorized with just the right bling. She shared her Mexican heritage with her family and friends, enriching our lives with food and traditions we continue to share. Her authentic and genuine nature honored and respected the humanity of everyone around her. She made friends wherever she went - her charm, kindness and joy drew people to her. She made every person she encountered feel they were uniquely special. She not only lit up a room, she lit up everyone in it. This was her magic.
Maria created a loving, lovely and safe home for her three daughters. Her home was filled with warmth and style. Preparing delicious, perfectly seasoned food (often with just a bit more cumin and a slice of jalapeno on the side) and creating a welcoming space were her gifts. Entering her home always felt like a hug.
After the death of Bud in 1998, Maria found love again with our incredible William "Bill" Ernest Wilson. Together they built a life and a family that celebrated resilience, adventure and love. Family was always most important to both and she fiercely loved her grandchildren who adore her.
Maria is beloved by her husband, Bill; her daughters, Rachel (Bill), Charlene (Chuck) and Andrea (Mike); her grandchildren and her loving and blended extended family.
Maria was our rock and the heart of our family. We miss her so.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Nelsen Funeral Home on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at 1:00 p.m.
