
He was born on 5 May 1923 in New York City and was proud to have been the third generation to have been born in Manhattan.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ellen Thomas McCullough, to whom he was married for 41 years. Also surviving is the family of his brother, John P. McCullough, who died in 2007.
Matt spent his childhood in Scarsdale, NY. In 1940, he enrolled in Hamilton College in Clinton, NY, from which he graduated in 1947 after spending the war years in military intelligence in Europe. He spent the next year at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland.
He joined the CIA in 1949 and remained with the agency for 27 years. He enjoyed his assignments immensely.
In retirement, he especially enjoyed his work in the information program of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. His knowledge of French and German stood him in good stead. He escorted visiting foreign dignitaries and when he finally left, he was given the title of Volunteer Emeritus and invited to come back any time.
Matt was a gifted linguist an avid skier and a man of wide knowledge, who will be greatly missed by his many friends.
