Michael Trent Lundberg

He was born at Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia, on July 20, 1953, to Ret. Col. Andrew M. Lundberg and Lillian Lundberg. He always joked that he was a day older than his father, whose birthday fell on July 21.

Michael was a graduate of York High School and Old Dominion University. For nearly 28 years, he served as the founding executive director and chief executive officer of Virginia Health Information, a Richmond-based nonprofit health care data organization driven by the mission to help Virginia make informed and impactful health care decisions.

Michael’s most cherished moments were spent on the Chickahominy River and Chesapeake Bay, boating and skiing with his family and friends. In Michael’s words, he never met a boat he didn’t like. 

Michael had a lifelong love of music and saw his first live concert, the legendary Jimi Hendrix, as a teenager. He went on to be a drummer in his high school band, Purple Paraphernalia, and played drums at home with his family until his final years.

He leaves behind a rich legacy and is survived by his devoted wife of 10 years, Cindy Watts; four children, Tracy Leeper, Erinn Evangelista, Rebecca Lundberg and Michael A. Lundberg; three stepchildren, Kendra DeKay, Colin Madden and Alice Madden; and four grandchildren, Alexa Solferino, Max Leeper, Lia Evangelista and Anna Kate Evangelista.

In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 25 years, Ruth A. Gibson, attorney at law; and his elder brother, Andrew M. Lundberg II.

A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Friday, July 10, at Williamsburg United Methodist Church, 500 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg. Interment will be private.

Michael’s mission in life was to leave his corner of the world better than when he came into it. In that spirit, in lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the following charities and organizations, whose causes and missions Michael deeply valued: Health Brigade, James River Association, Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Circle Center Adult Day Services.
