Obituary of Miriam "Mimi" Koenig

IN THE CARE OF

Nelsen Williamsburg

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mimi Koenig at her home in Williamsburg, VA. on March 1st from Alzheimer’s disease. Mimi was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, and had a big smile for everyone she came across. We are heartened in our belief that she is smiling, laughing, and singing yet again after her long illness. We are grateful for the caregivers from Caring Touch that took such compassionate care of her at home during this challenging year. Miriam “Mimi” Ruth Davis was born in Nanticoke, Pa. to Ralph and Dorothy Davis, the firstborn of three sisters. Their young family moved to Red Bank, NJ, where the children grew up going to the beach, excelling in school, and for Mimi, studying piano and voice, showcased in both school and in church. Music was Mimi’s true passion and joy. Her talent and perfect pitch accompanied her from Red Bank High to Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pa. Her college years were highlighted by many social events at Muhlenberg College, where she met the love of her life, and her husband of 62 years, Wolfgang Koenig. They married, and settled in her hometown, as Wolf started his career at Irving Trust Co. on Wall Street, and she worked at Bendix Corporation. They had two children while living in Shrewsbury, NJ, and raised their family enjoying other family close by, many wonderful friends, the Sea Bright beach, and sailing on the Navesink. Mimi became a stay-at-home mom and focused again on music, as a member of the Shrewsbury Chorale, and serving as the lead soprano soloist at the United Methodist Church in Red Bank. Over the next fifty plus years, her musical avocation provided countless joy to many through her association with a variety of choral groups. After moving to Summit, NJ, she was a featured soloist at both Central Presbyterian Church and St. Stephen’s Church in Millburn. She also performed with the Summit Chorale, and her most thrilling performance was at Carnegie Recital Hall. Summit’s proximity to New York City provided many opportunities to enjoy Broadway shows, and incredible classical and jazz music, the favorites of the Koenig household. After a long career in banking, Wolf retired, and he and Mimi moved to Governor’s Land in Williamsburg, Va. where they have enjoyed 23 wonderful years with many new friends, and some old. They found another welcoming church home at Williamsburg Presbyterian where Mimi was a member of the choir, and where Wolf has served in many volunteer leadership roles. Mimi was also a member of the Williamsburg Choral Guild and her ladies church circle and bible study. Mimi will be truly missed by her loved ones, especially for her often cited characteristics: her love of family and music, her welcoming and friendly demeanor, and her willingness to laugh, out loud and joyously. Mimi is survived by her eternally devoted husband, Wolf, her daughter, Lynn Koenig, of Salt Lake City, Ut, and her son Dave Koenig (Rosy) of Williamsburg, Va. She is survived by her sister, Barbara Weikel (Keith), of Sea Isle, Ga., and is predeceased by her youngest sister, Ellen Kerfoot. She also leaves behind four adoring grandchildren: Meghan Kellner and Scott Kellner of Salt Lake City Ut, Danielle Heinlein of Boston, Ma, and Jordan Heinlein of Park City, Ut. A small private service will be held on March 9th, with a Celebration of Life planned for the fall. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mimi’s name can be made to: The Virginia Symphony Orchestra (https://tickets.virginiasymphony.org/donate/contribute1) or The Williamsburg Presbyterian Church Music Fund (http://www.mywpc.org/memorial).
