Nancy Mae Tobin of Williamsburg passed away peacefully on June 15, 2026. She was ninety-one years old. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Tobin, and her parents, Harold and Christine Mudgett Linderman.
Nancy is survived by four children: Christine (Robert) Braig, Daniel (Lisa) Tobin, Jeanne (Steven) Gordon, and Kathleen (Michael) McNulty; ten grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren; her brothers, Robert (Gloria) and Richard (Joanne) Linderman; sister-in-law, Dr. Elisabeth Tobin; and many nieces and nephews. She loved her family dearly which was evident when all ten grandchildren traveled from near and far to visit her before passing.
Nancy was an avid duplicate bridge player, often winning first place in tournaments and achieving a Sapphire status. She organized various bridge games in the Williamsburg community and traveled to many tournaments around the country. A Bingo enthusiast, she also enjoyed playing poker, gin rummy, and the slots at the casino. Nancy enjoyed horse races, always betting each year on the winning horse at the Kentucky Derby.
As a former realtor for McCardle Realty and the Human Resource Director for the Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority, Nancy wore many hats. She raised four children while working part-time for the CNU psychology department and took several college courses. Her dream was to obtain a college degree and write a book. Nancy loved all kinds of music, especially jazz. She enjoyed cooking for her family and was known for her chicken enchiladas, Christmas coffee cake, and her famous devil’s food whipped cream layered birthday cake.
Nancy’s mother passed away during childbirth. She was raised by her grandparents and father. Due to her upbringing, Nancy developed a strong sense of independence and determination. She was most proud of moving with her husband, Paul, as newlyweds, from Illinois to California to begin a life of adventure.
Nancy will be remembered for her strength, determination, good-hearted “sass”, and her compassion for others. She valued her independence and inspired her children to go for their dreams. Her children remember her many quips such as “growing old isn’t for sissies.” Her children will remember the First Watch lunches, dinner parties, jazz concerts, card games, and Christmas mornings.
