Peter immigrated from Berchtesgaden, Germany, and became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America in 1955, joining the Army soon after. He loved America and the meaning behind the colors red, white, and blue. He served in Korea in hopes to receive a duty station of his choosing, which was Fort Monroe.
He honorably retired from the Army (Fort Eustis) in 1975. His army awards include: The National Defense Service Metal, Parachutist badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal (6th award), Army Commendation Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea).
After retiring from the Army as a food service specialist, he continued to pursue his love for cooking and even had his own catering business for a time, and then again retired from A. Busch Brewery.
He lived in Newport News for many years prior to moving to Williamsburg in 1986. He was married to Inge Bauer in 1960. His son, Paul Obraczka, was born in 1957, and Mark Obraczka was born in 1965.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and volunteered at Colonial Williamsburg. Peter also took part in the Adopt a Highway program, cleaning Airport Road locally for many years.
Peter liked to be outdoors and ride his bike. He spent many days hiking, trail riding and walking through Colonial Williamsburg. This love for the outdoors led him to purchase a mountain home in West Virginia, where he enjoyed vacationing and skiing.
