

Rick was born in Montreal, Canada on August 26, 1946 to Ken and Nina Hughes. He came to the United States in July of 1959 at the age of 13, along with his parents, his sister, Sandra Deans, and brother, Stuart Hughes (Jessica). He was a Lineman in the US Army, serving in Vietnam. He became a United States citizen while serving in the Army.
Rick was a wonderful husband to Linde, his devoted wife of 44 years, and an amazing father to his three children, Kim King (Brian), of Beaverdam, VA, Michael Hughes, and Jason Scott Hughes, both of Williamsburg, VA. He was affectionately known as "Grumpy" to his 6 grandchildren, Matt Mohr (Vanessa), Mackenzie Mohr (Isaiah), Dylan King, Gavin King, Andrew Mason, and Jonathan Mason (Lauren). He was "Uncle Rick" and very close to his nephews, Brian Deans (Shawn) and Drew Deans.
Rick worked as a cable splicer at C&P Telephone Company (now Verizon) retiring after 30 plus years. Being the hard worker he was, he then went back to work at GMSI at Ft. Eustis, finally retiring in January, 2016.
Rick loved hunting, fishing, and boating. He enjoyed golf and anything outdoors. He was a proud member of the Elks Lodge of Newport News.
Soon after retiring, Rick was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and neuropathy. Linde took amazing care of him, and she was assisted by the phenomenal nurses and aids from AGC Hospice.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Robert Deans, and his special dogs, Black Jack and Winchester.
Rick chose to be cremated. A service will be held on July 1, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg, VA 23188.
