Robert Leonard Green “Bob” born July 14, 1945, son of Marie Van Lassiter and Leonard Roser Green, passed away in Williamsburg, Virginia on September 10th, 2023. Bob leaves a legacy of a life well-lived. He was born and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia, where he and his wife Carole graduated from Churchland High School. A 1967 graduate from Virginia Military Institute Bob served in the Army upon graduation where he was a combat engineer, 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam. Upon returning from Vietnam, he earned a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Virginia. Bob was a well-respected engineer and leader, culminating his professional engineering career as President of Wiley/Wilson architectural and engineering firm in Lynchburg, Virginia. Bob was also a talented administrator and returned to Virginia Military Institute filling various roles, culminating as Deputy Superintendent for Finance, Administration and Support, successfully overseeing a broad portfolio of VMI operations. He had a mind that thrived on details, of which he had incredible recall. Bob was an expert working with his subordinates, constantly focusing on developing them as individuals. Most of all, he enjoyed working to develop new young leaders. He had a knack for editing and working problems, with a constant personal charge to somehow add value to whatever came across his desk. Most notably, Bob’s daily life reflected a commitment to the values of honesty, integrity and hard work. He was devoted to VMI and admired and respected by all who knew him, especially those members of the VMI family as well as his close friends. Bob loved to ski, hike, and their twice a year trips to the Outer Banks with his closest high school friends. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carole and a sister, Linda Bashford and a niece Kelly Collins and many loving friends. Services will be held at 2:00 PM on October 3 at King of Glory Lutheran Church, 4897 Longhill Rd., Williamsburg, Virginia 23188.
