

Robert Trent Winfree, Jr., 91, a retired Army colonel, died March 14, 2015, at the Greenfield Senior Living Residence in Williamsburg, Virginia. The cause of death was complications due to a stroke. Born in Daytona Beach, Florida, on January 3, 1924, to Robert Trent and Katherine Whitlow Winfree, Col. Winfree spent his formative years in Lexington, Kentucky. He attended the University of Kentucky and graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1946. Col. Winfree was a member of the 1960 graduating class of the United States Army Command and General Staff College. He served with distinction in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. After 28 years in the Army, Col. Winfree retired in 1974. His military decorations include the Bronze Star, National Service, and Meritorious Service Medals. After retirement, Col. Winfree moved to Williamsburg, where he pursued his avid passion for golf. He also enjoyed international travel. He was preceded in death by his parents, noted above, his brother, William Whitlow Winfree, and his first wife, Doris Aultman Winfree. Survivors include his wife, Jasmine, daughters Lane W. Bahr and Katherine Winfree, and six grandchildren. A reception for friends will be held on Friday, March 20, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the Nelsen Funeral Home at 3785 Strawberry Plains Road in Williamsburg.
