Roger was born on February 23, 1949, in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, to Charles Makl and Grace Dorothy (Weidner) Makl. Roger was raised in a faithful home, where his mother was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Applebachsville, Pennsylvania. Alongside his six siblings, Mark, Elaine, Charles, Brian, Roy, and Barry, Roger regularly attended church services and Sunday School, forming a strong foundation of faith that stayed with him throughout his life.
Roger graduated from Quakertown Community High School in 1967 and proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, where he found great fulfillment and enjoyment in his service.
Known for his outgoing personality and quick sense of humor, Roger was a natural jokester who brought laughter to those around him. He had a deep love for animals, especially for his loyal black Labrador Retriever, Thor, who was his faithful companion for 18 years.
Roger lived in a few different towns in Wisconsin, with his favorite home being in Baraboo, where he shared a life with his beloved wife, Vickie Lynn, whom he married on September 24, 1999. Together, they embraced country living, enjoying gardening, canning vegetables, and making homemade pasta.
An avid outdoorsman, Roger loved deer hunting, especially the time spent hunting with his brother Charles during visits to South Carolina. He spent many years working in the timeshare industry, which also allowed him and Vickie to enjoy deep sea fishing during their stays in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Later in life, Roger and Vickie made their home in Williamsburg, Virginia. After leaving the timeshare industry, he found joy in a slower pace of life while working at Ace Hardware from January 2014 until August 2019.
Roger is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Vickie; his daughter, Jodi Chandler; his granddaughters, Meghan Busse and Mckenna Busse; his sister, Elaine Perla (John); his brothers, Charles (Terri), Brian (Lark), Roy Makl, and Barry Makl; as well as his nephew Jeremy and nieces Shae and Jessica.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Grace; his brother, Mark; and his nephew, Tim.
The family wants to recognize and honor Tia Heath, Roger's loving caregiver and guardian angel. She is missing him so much. She continues to devote herself to caring for Vickie. She's been an absolute blessing.
A Memorial Service will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, VA 23188, US, on June 26, 2026 at 12:30 pm, and a live stream is available at https://www.facebook.com/125632257490458.
