Though she was born in a hospital in Suffern, NY, Ruth lived and grew up in Ramsey, NJ. Before graduating from Ramsey High School, she played softball when it first began for girls, spent time as a cheerleader, and played church league basketball. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Missouri then went on to earn her Master of Arts in Education from St. Peter’s College in New Jersey. She lived in Glen Rock, NJ for over 20 years before moving to Virginia when she retired from teaching at Garfield Middle School in Garfield, NJ.
As a young adult, Ruth was also heavily involved in the church choir and formed a vocal group called Brothers in Song that performed throughout Northern New Jersey. Her love of music, singing, and dance followed her into adulthood, where she continued to sing in church choirs – most recently, at St. Stephen Lutheran Church. She was also thrilled to travel all over the U.S., Canada, and Ireland supporting her daughter in Irish dance competitions.
Always an animal lover, Ruth volunteered for various rescue organizations and ended up giving forever homes to many of the pets she fostered.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Erin Elizabeth Geary and her fiancé, Christopher Lundy. She will also be missed by her brother, Donald J. Slifer, his wife, Jackie, and their son, Shaun.
Visitation will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, VA on October 24 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.
Memorial contributions in Ruth’s honor may be made to the ASPCA or your animal organization of choice.
