She was born on March 2, 1936 in Reidsville, NC where she attended public schools before graduating from the University of North Carolina Greensboro where she majored in History and English. Shirley taught high school in Plainfield, NJ and later did substitute teaching in Idaho Falls, Idaho and Williamsburg - James City County schools in Williamsburg where she and her husband, Dick, lived since 1979.
Shirley's life centered around her family-- Dick, son Stephen and daughter Susan. She was a wife and mother for all seasons, always putting a family member first and stepping out of any limelight she rightfully deserved. Early in their married life of 62 years, she and Dick would play golf together locally and found time in their earlier travels to play while on the road. She loved gardening, her book club in Governor's Land where they lived, pot luck group, and for many years, the Garden Club. High on Shirley's list of fun projects was researching where she and Dick would travel next. For more than 30 years they travelled to Europe, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Bermuda and all across this great country. Perhaps nothing brought more pleasure to Shirley than another trip to Jackson, WY and Grand Teton National Park.
Shirley is survived by her son Stephen of Providence Forge, VA and daughter Susan of Broomfield, CO. Stephen was devoted to her and Susan bonded with her Mom beautifully. She was predeceased by her parents Thomas Walter and Edna Moore Pearman, her husband Richard and brother Robert. In addition to her children, she leaves behind brother Harold Pearman (Sandra), of Wake Forest, NC, and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are being made by Nelsen Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Memorial gifts may be made to the University of North Carolina Greensboro in Shirley's honor: Advancement Operations-UNCG PO Box 26170 Greensboro, NC 27402.
