Born beneath the winter skies of Japan, Sue’s life was a tapestry woven across continents — from the vibrant streets of Thailand to the quiet shores of Manteo, North Carolina, and the heart of Northern Virginia. She shared more adventures with her five siblings than memory can hold — some too wild to recount, others too dear to forget — all etched in the heart like stars scattered across a night sky.
Sue’s heart belonged most deeply to her daughter, Samantha Smiley — her greatest joy, her constant companion, and the light of her life.
A proud graduate of Manteo High School (Class of 1976) and Old Dominion University (Class of 2004), Sue devoted her professional life to nurturing young minds in the public schools of Williamsburg and Falls Church, Virginia. For over three decades, she was a quiet force of kindness and dedication — guiding, encouraging, and uplifting students with a grace that never sought recognition. Whether sewing costumes for the school play, cheering on the girls tennis team, organizing graduation ceremonies, or inspiring runners in the girls club, Sue gave her time and heart freely. She believed she was simply doing her job — but to those who knew her, she was a beacon of warmth and generosity.
Sue is survived by her mother, Peggy; her siblings, Jeff, Mike, Dan, Paul, and Sarah; her daughter, Samantha; and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, and friends who carry her memory with them.
