Susan Elizabeth Parrish Moreland, 82, of Williamsburg, VA, formerly of North Andover, MA, entered into eternal rest on April 1, 2023. Born on October 20, 1940 in Tennessee, Sue grew up in the small town of Kenbridge, VA. She raised her family in Massachusetts before relocating to Williamsburg.
Sue’s love for her husband, Ted, children—Steve (Audrey) and Lisa (Steve)—and grandchildren—Stephen, John, Nico, Jack, and Tony—was as boundless as theirs for her.
Sue’s parents, Jack and Helen, inspired a lifelong commitment to education. Sue graduated with honors from Radford University in 1961 where she studied psychology, sang in the Choral and Glee Clubs, and belonged to many social clubs. In her second act, Sue earned her M.Ed. from The College of William and Mary (1995) and began a career as an elementary school counselor in Gloucester County, VA, guiding countless children through life’s greatest challenges and brightest joys.
Nobody meant more to Sue than her family, raising two children and becoming “Grammy” to five grandsons alongside her partner for over 60 years, Ted (“Gramdad”). In retirement, Sue continued to cultivate community in new corners of life. She could often be found volunteering at Williamsburg United Methodist Church, scrimmaging with friends on the tennis court, cycling across the U.S. and Europe, or enjoying walks through the Ford’s Colony neighborhood where she and Ted have lived for the last 35 years.
Sue truly never met a stranger. Everyone—family, friends, and students—will always cherish and remember Sue for her warm and generous spirit, kind and gentle smile, and… an occasional cat nap!
In her final years, Sue confronted Alzheimer’s disease with extraordinary stoicism, courage, and will. Sue’s family expresses their appreciation for the care of the amazing staff at The Virginia House with particular gratitude to Lisa Machamer, who brought unmatched compassion and care to Sue’s final years.
Sue will be desperately missed by all whom she has left behind. To be loved by her was to be truly blessed.
Sue is predeceased by her parents Jack and Helen (Coleman) Parrish. She is survived by her husband Stephen Theodore Moreland Jr.; son Stephen Moreland lll (Audrey); daughter Lisa Pagana (Stephen); grandsons Stephen Moreland IV, John Moreland, Nico Pagana, Jack Pagana, Tony Pagana; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Williamsburg United Methodist Church, Williamsburg, VA at 2:00pm on April 25, 2023. The family will greet attendees afterwards in the church reception area.
