Valerie “Val” Chisholm, aged 87 passed away on 18 December 2023 in her Williamsburg Landing home after a long and wonderful life full of family, friends, and service to her country. Val was born on 10 June 1936 in Rockport, Massachusetts to Thomas Moroney and Lillian (Olsen) Moroney.
Val was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 54 years, William “Chip” Chisholm, together parents of surviving son, Steve (Janice) and daughter, Debbie (Chris) Clark and grandparents, to Allison Clark and Samantha (Jackson) Williams, who all deeply cherish Val’s memory.
Val grew up in Beverly, Massachusetts and graduated from nearby Endicott College prior to joining the Department of Defense and beginning a long civilian career of selfless service to her country and her family. Whether in Washington, D.C., Frankfurt, Germany, Okinawa, Japan, Alice Springs, Australia or Williamsburg, Virginia Val devoted herself as an accomplished professional human resources officer while also demonstrating a fierce devotion to her husband, children, grandchildren, many dear friends as well a number of charitable community organizations that all benefited significantly from her boundless energy and focused advocacy.
Upon retirement in 1992, Val and Chip accomplished the long-held goal of living in Williamsburg permanently and settled happily in Queens Lake. Their home quickly became a base for traveling the country via RV, stopping often to visit Debbie and family in Texas and friends scattered across the county. When home their house was often filled with visiting family and friends, as their love of hosting guests was equal to their love for the road. During her retirement Val focused a great deal of her significant energy as a volunteer, fundraiser and board member to Williamsburg “Meals on Wheels” often driving routes to deliver meals to those in need as well as in-person fundraising at local merchant sites and also pitching the MOW cause to congregations at local churches on Sundays. Val was also a stalwart supporter of F.I.S.H. (food pantry and clothing), in particular for their assistance to helping women find employment and support to families in need.
Val transitioned to Williamsburg Landing in 2016 and quickly became a well-known fixture there, making many new friends and continuing older friendships as neighbors and friends also made The Landing their homes as well. Val was also well known for her genuine affection and care for the many staff members of The Landing who cared so well for her there. She considered many staff members as close friends who always enjoyed trading greetings and quips with her throughout the day. As was her want, Val continued to be an active voice for improvement as she often participated in resident focus groups and forums.
As Val recently continued to celebrated significant events such as the college graduations of Allison and Samantha and the recent wedding of Samantha here in Queens Lake in September 2023, a celebration of her life will be held at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, Virginia on Friday, 17 May 2024 at 11:00 am. Val’s final resting place will Arlington National Cemetery where she will interred with Chip in the Spring/Summer of 2025.
