Garry was born on June 15, 1956 in Lansing, MI to Kenneth and Rose Mary (Campbell) VanOstran. He graduated from Williamston High School where he played varsity basketball. Garry had a long career in sales with Paramount Coffee Company which brought pride and joy as he developed friendships with customers over the years. Garry was married to Mary Frances (Schaffer), who passed away in 2018.
He was known for his quick wit and sense of humor, and always had a joke or funny story ready to be shared. Garry enjoyed bowling, which allowed him the opportunity to travel across the country with friends for national tournaments; with a high game of 299 he was in pursuit of the elusive perfect score. He was a life-long and passionate golfer and was well known at the local country clubs. He also had a passion for sports, especially his beloved Michigan State Spartans. No matter the sport, Garry was cheering for Sparty, and for any team playing the school from Ann Arbor. Family knew the season of the year by hearing Garry give the highlights from the most recent game played by the Pistons, the Tigers, or the Lions. These teams tended to have something in common: hard working, humble, loyal. These are qualities Garry appreciated, in sports and in life.
Garry was preceded in death by his wife Mary Frances, father Kenneth and brother Daniel. He is survived by his mother Rose Mary, his sisters Kathy Fellows, Teresa (Abe) Saleh, and Lynette (Gary) Miller, Jennifer (Scott) Combs, Angela (Rich) DeKett, and Janice VanOstran, his brother Scott (Lisa), his stepson Chris (Candice) Pohl, grandchildren Anna, Alex, and Emily, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, August 21, 2020 at Saint Mary Catholic Church of Williamston at 11:00 a.m., with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. There will also be visitation on Thursday, August 20 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., with Rosary at 7:00 p.m.
