A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed physician, James lived a life of service, dedication, and quiet strength.
Born and raised in Lakewood Ohio, James pursued a distinguished career in medicine. He earned his undergraduate degree from Cornell University where he met his first wife and married in 1958. He attended the Ohio State University College of Medicine, where he graduated in 1963. He dedicated his professional life to caring for others as a cardiac doctor at Ingham Regional Medical Center, where his patients benefited not only from his medical expertise but also from his deeply compassionate nature. He cultivated a safe and loving environment for those he cared for.
In addition to his medical career, James had a distinguished Navy career, serving as a commanding officer in the Navy Reserve. His time in the service reflected his steadfast commitment to duty, leadership, and the well-being of others.
Beyond his profession, James was a man of adventure and deep appreciation for nature. He loved traveling, camping, and exploring the great outdoors, frequently hauling his camper to National and State Parks across the country. An avid scuba diver, he spent time snorkeling in the Florida Keys and the Cayman Islands. James had a deep love for Dobermans, which he bred in his younger years. He also participated in many dog shows, showcasing his dedication to the breed and his appreciation for their intelligence and strength. He also found joy in woodworking, hunting, fishing, always creating a personal paradise in every home he lived in and spending quality time with his loved ones. Whether tending to his garden—where his hot peppers were a favorite—or monitoring the weather with his personal stations, nature was always central to his life with his family.
Above all, James was a family man. He is survived and deeply missed by his loving wife of 32 years, Marietta T. Kloepfer; his children, Russell (Renee), Douglas (Erin), and Jessica Like; and his sisters-in-law, Mary Tomich, Veronica Dostal, Patricia Tomich, and Paula Warren. He is forever cherished by his nine grandchildren: Heather Henninger, James Kloepfer, Jennifer Graham, Jeffrey Kloepfer II, Adele Kloepfer, Clara Kloepfer, Hunter Like, Bishop Neal, and Annalise Lynch. His legacy continues through 13 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Delores; his son, Jeffrey, and Jeffrey’s wife, Barbara; his parents, Jay Kloepfer and Frances Smith-Kloepfer; and his brother, William Smith-Kloepfer.
James’ life was one of quiet humility, deep love, and unwavering commitment to those he served—whether through his medical practice, military career, or family. His presence and kindness will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
A celebration of his life will take place in the Spring with his family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude or your local charity.
