Ledith will be remembered as a woman of unwavering faith and unconditional love who deeply enjoyed spending time with her family.
Ledith grew up in Constantine, MI, where she graduated at the top of her class and was named Valedictorian of the Constantine High School Class of 1950. She married the love of her life, Max Ambs, on August 12, 1956, at Messiah Lutheran Church. At that time both Max and Ledith were teachers and eventually settled in Williamston, MI, to raise their family. As they settled into the area, they became members of Faith Lutheran Church, where Ledith was an active member for more than 50 years and built many lasting friendships within the congregation.
As a former teacher, and later a retired JC Penny employee, Ledith had a strong work ethic that she instilled in her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling during the summers, as many teachers do, camping and visiting historical sites throughout the country. She loved taking her family to places such as Battle of Gettysburg battlefield, Washington, and Kennedy Space Center. She never missed an opportunity to witness history in the making, even bringing her family as close as possible to watch the launch of Space Shuttle Discovery during one of its missions in the 1990s.
Ledith was also known for her love of Michigan State University, especially the Spartan Marching Band, football, men's basketball, and ice hockey. She loved attending any event the band was a part of and was able to travel the world with the MSU Alumni Band to watch them and her daughters, Cheryl & Susan, perform. She was a proud supporter as they traveled to countries such as Austria, Czech Republic, and Hungary, but nothing compared to the sound of the band in Spartan Stadium on a home football game day. Ledith continued attending Spartan football games well into her 80s, with her daughters and grandchildren in tow. She followed as many Spartan athletic competitions as possible, right up until she could no longer watch them, and even then, she kept the games on in the background so she could listen.
She loved hosting family gatherings and sharing her baking and cooking tips and tricks. As a grandmother, her grandchildren cherished time spent in the kitchen learning to make many of her traditional recipes enjoyed at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, birthdays, and countless other celebrations. She was known for keeping a weekly stash of baked goods in a Tupperware container on the kitchen counter. Anyone who stopped by could always count on a cookie or treat to enjoy during their visit.
Ledith was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Neva Garber; her loving husband, Max Ambs; her sister and brother-in-law, Sherriel and Herb Coates; and her brother-in-law, Louis Baima.
She is survived by her brother, Ralph (Evelyn) Garber; sister, Marjorie Baima; loving children, Charles (Karen) Ambs, Cathy (David) Welch, Cheryl Ambs, and Susan Ambs; grandchildren, Jayme (Kevin) Bisard, Leighanne (Samantha) Larson Shultz, Emily Ambs (Michael Winslow), and Brandon Ambs; great-grandchildren, Evalyn and Hazel Bisard, Nolan and Blakely VanSickler, and Felix Winslow; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family of Ledith would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff and caregivers at Vista Springs at Timber Ridge for their compassion and dedicated care. We also wish to thank Heart to Heart Hospice of Lansing for the comfort and support they provided during her end-of-life journey.
