Michael Joseph Bloom, 68, known by many as “Mike, Dad, Grandpa, and Coach Bloom”, passed away peacefully at his home on the farm October 12, 2025. Born April 30, 1957, in Enid, Oklahoma, he was the son of Joseph and Barbara (DePagter) Bloom.
Mike grew up on his parent’s farm in Bell Oak and attended Webberville Schools through 11th grade. He was a member of the FFA and 4H club participating in archery, shooting sports, showing swine, cattle, and poultry. He transferred to Dansville School for senior year prompted by his love of wrestling. This is where he met his wife, best friend, and lifelong cheerleader of 44 years Debra (Breslin) Bloom. Mike played football, baseball, fast pitch softball, wrestling, and ran track. He earned title of State Champion for wrestling that year. After high school Mike attended Grand Valley College where he wrestled and played football. He was also a pitcher on the baseball team and graduated from Grand Rapids Junior College for physical education.
Mike and Debra married on October 10, 1981 in Lansing, Michigan. The same year, Mike also joined the Michigan Department of Corrections as an officer where he worked for over 35 years; retiring as a sergeant. He enjoyed the marksmanship competition held through the department, and made many lifelong friends. He was an avid outdoorsman with many hunting and fishing trips to the Upper Peninsula, Montana, and Canada. He hunted deer, elk, bear, turkey, pheasant & other small game. In addition, he also enjoyed raising a variety of farm animals, and working the land on his tractors. He enjoyed teaching and served his community as 4H archery leader for several years. He coached wrestling in Dansville and Mason. He proudly founded the Webberville wrestling club where he coached for decades. The Webberville wrestling room is dedicated in Mike’s honor.
Mike and Deb were blessed with 6 children and 17 grandchildren; all of whom he loved with everything he had. Like his father, Mike was known for his large hands the size of dinner plates. Though intimidating, and hands calloused from hard work, he was quick to give you a giant “Grandpa hug” with a pat on the back alongside words of wisdom and encouragement.
He is survived by his loving wife Debra Bloom; children Katie (Nick) Rinehart, Sara (Lee) McCurdy, Joseph (Courtney) Bloom, Hannah (Adam) Fedewa, Jennifer (Justin) Love, Emily (Casey) Miller; siblings Cindy Dansby, Brian Bloom, Scott Bloom, Carrie (Mark) Hayward, Ruth Bloom; and aunt JoAnn McCrum. He also leaves behind 17 grandchildren Sophia, Koy, Wyatt, Addilynn, James, Ellianna, Blakely, Maddison, William, Lottie, Holden, Izzy, Lucian, David, Tallulah, Olivia, and Julius; and many loyal and loving pets. He had an unwavering love for his family, farming, hunting, fishing, coaching, and the simple joys of life.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all those who have supported them during this time of loss for their kindness and compassion.
