Patricia Ann (Mingus) Powers, 81, passed away on Sunday, February 25, surrounded by her children. The daughter of Harland and Charlotte (Myers) Mingus, she was born on October 26, 1936, and grew up in Delta Mills, graduating from Grand Ledge High School. After marrying Larry Powers on April 21, 1956, she and Larry raised their family in Williamston, Michigan. She is survived by her five children: Tim (Lynn Rogers) Powers, Tom (Deb Schneemann) Powers, Becky (Mike) Moore, John (Kathleen Campbell) Powers, and Joe (Cyndi Boss) Powers as well as her fourteen grandchildren: Gabe (Dana) Powers, Gina Powers, Grant (Kristin) Powers, Jenny (Jess) Guasco, Greg Powers, Raymond (Caitlin) Moore, Luke Moore, Annie Moore, Josh Powers, Alex Powers, Daniel Powers, Tyler Powers, Flynn Powers, and Esabella Powers. Along with her grandchildren, whom she cherished, she has seven beloved great-grandchildren: Merilee, Jovee, Kerstee, Jakob, Sammy, Finnegan, and Georgia. She is also survived by her brother, Butch (Margaret) Mingus and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry, on April 4, 1990; her parents; her sister, Sandy; and her daughter-in-law; Leslie.
After her children had grown and started their new lives, she returned to college and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Family Education. With this degree in hand, she found her heart’s calling in the work of Hospital and Grief Chaplaincy.
Her love of music, playing instruments and singing, is a gift she had passed to many of her children and grandchildren, who have shared many fun moments singing with Mom and Grandma. She was also passionate about dancing and took every opportunity to do so joyfully.
Pat was always up for an adventure and enjoyed going on trips with her family and friends, such as the time she combined her love of adventure and music by flying to England to attend the concert of her favorite signer, Neil Diamond.
Faith in God was a foundation for Pat, and she spent many years at St. Mary’s Parish in Williamston helping where she could as well as spending time studying the Bible and her Catholic faith with fellow pilgrims on the faith journey, a group of women who have been close friends with Pat for many years.
However, Pat’s passion was her family whom she loved deeply, cherishing special times with them, from lazy days at the lake to fun-filled birthdays and delightful Christmas get-togethers. The legacy that she leaves with her children is a deep commitment to family, where all find time to laugh, share stories, and play games. (She was a formidable foe when it came to playing Monopoly.) Her happiest days were those spent with her family.
All family and friends are welcome to the visitation at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home – Williamston Chapel from 4:00-8:00 pm on Tuesday, February 27. There will also be a visitation from 10:00-11:00 am on Wednesday, February 28 with the celebration of her funeral mass following at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s church in Williamston, Michigan with Fr. Peter Clark presiding. The burial will follow the mass in Mount Calvary Cemetery on Rowley Road.
Instead of flowers, please consider making a donation in Pat’s name to one of the following charities: Camp Sancta Maria where many of her grandchildren have enjoyed their faith-filled summer programs (5361 M-32, Gaylord, MI 49734), Crohns & Colitis Foundation (crohnscolitisfoundation.org), or St. Vincent Catholic Charities (stvcc.org).
