Mary Clyde or "Granny" lived a full life of 99 years that calls for celebration. She was born October 27, 1915 to the late James Ed and Estelle Hardison. She grew up working on a smallfarm in Williams Township where she attended the Manning School behind Fairview Christian Church.
ln 1931, she married lrvin D. Coltrain and the two had a son the following year, Reginald "Reg" Wyatt Coltrain. They farmed together, attended Fairview Christian Church and Mary Clyde looked after lrvin until his death from pneumonia in 1952. During this time, Mary Clyde started her own business, Reliable Sales, where she conducted doorto-door sales of household goods. She had an eye for business that
resulted in her teaching herself double-entry bookkeeping. ln 1956 she wed James Leroy "Roy" Fleming and the two lived "up-town" where they were members of Memorial Baptist Church. Sadly, Mary Clyde was widowed again in 1964 after Roy had a heart attack, but God had a plan in place. At that time, Mary Clyde was helping to look after a failing neighbor who had a nephew, Clarence Wendell Peele. Wendell and Mary Clyde
quickly became friends and decided to tie the knot in 1965. During this time, Mary Clyde had worked at Griffin Motor Company and went on to keep books at Corey True Value Hardware. Wendell and Mary Clyde had many adventures together; they drove to Florida, visited the World's Fair in New York and even traveled to Spain. They built a house beside Mary Clyde's son and daughter-in-law and attended Reddicks Grove
Baptist Church. They made many memories together before Wendell was lost to leukemia in 1982. While some might have succumbed to sadness after so many goodbyes, Mary Clyde continued to work to strengthen her faith and family and will always be remembered as a strong woman. Many people will also remember her for her peach jacks, steamed cabbage, Christmas candy and crocheting. She was also an animal lover and avid gardener- especially when it came to her blueberry bushes.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Reg and Leda Faye Coltrain of Williamston, NC; grandson, Wyatt Coltrain of Greenville, NC; great-granddaughters, Cassie Harris of Williamston, NC and Lane Greene and husband, Alex of Cary, NC. She is also survived by her sister, Reba Grimes of Williamston, NC.
ln addition to her husbands, her granddaughter, Jennifer Harris precedes her in death as well as several siblings; Bud Hardison, Verna Gray Hopkins, Dick Hardison, Barbara Hopkins, Bernice Capps, Leda Faye Phelps and Pete Gardner.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 26th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Reddicks Grove Baptist Church and at other times at the residence of Reg Coltrain. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, May 27th at 11:00 am at Reddicks Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Woodlawn.
Memorials may be made to Reddick's Grove Baptist Church or the giver's favorite charity.
