Gloria Aprile Finley

At age 98, passed away after a long life defined by devotion to family, a gift for teaching, and a deep appreciation for the people and places that shaped her.

Born May 5, 1928, in Moravia, New York, Gloria was the daughter of Francis and Margaret Aprile. She treasured memories of her early childhood in Geneseo, where she grew up with her brothers, Francis and James. The wartime economy prompted the Aprile family to relocate to Buffalo, beginning a new chapter in Gloria’s life.

Gloria graduated from Kensington High School in 1946 and from Buffalo State Teachers College in 1950. For Gloria, teaching elementary school was more than a profession; it was a calling. Her warmth and enthusiasm made her much loved by her students. Her commitment to education eventually took her to Harvard University, where she earned a Master of Arts in Education—an achievement that reflected both her intellectual curiosity and her lifelong dedication to helping children learn and thrive.

Not long after returning from Boston, Gloria met the love of her life, James Finley. They married in April 1962 and built a loving family together, welcoming daughters Suzanne (Neureiter) and Nancy. Gloria brought the same care and imagination she offered her students to raising her daughters and creating a home filled with learning, affection, and encouragement.

Her gifts as an educator extended well beyond the classroom. Gloria served for many years as a Sunday school teacher and was an active member and president of the PTA. She also taught English one-on-one to Korean immigrants. She was an active member of Calvary Episcopal Church, leading the prayer chain for many years with care and discretion. She also volunteered at the Diocesan House. Whether leading, teaching, or volunteering, she gave generously of her time and made people feel seen, capable, and valued.

Gloria was especially delighted to be a grandmother. She loved reading with her three grandchildren, inventing plays with them, and creating silly bedtime rituals that became treasured family memories. She was immensely proud of each of them and followed their lives with enduring interest and joy. Her grandchildren will remember not only the stories she shared, but also the love and undivided attention she brought to their time together.

In her final years, Gloria remained grateful for the comfort and familiarity of her own home. She was able to live there until the end, surrounded by love and cared for by her beloved daughter Nancy. That gift meant everything to her and reflected the closeness at the heart of her family.

Gloria was preceded in death by her husband, James, and her two brothers, Francis and James. She is survived by her daughters, Suzanne Neureiter (Paul) and Nancy Finley; her grandchildren, Elizabeth, Christopher, and Laura Neureiter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
