

Dr. Harvey D. Sprowl of Snyder, New York, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2013. Harvey married his “high school sweetheart”, Joan (Mayer) Sprowl in 1953. In addition to being a devoted husband, Harvey was also a loving father to his sons Chris and Josh, father-in-law to Christie and Robin, and grandfather to Chloe, Natalie, Lauren and Jonathan.
Harvey graduated from Kensington High School in 1947. He continued his education earning his undergraduate degree from SUNY Buffalo and then proceeded to graduate from the University of Buffalo School of Dentistry in 1960. Upon graduation Harvey opened his private practice in Williamsville, N.Y., and became a part time instructor of clinical dentistry at U.B. In 1973 Harvey dedicated himself full time to advancing the dental profession at the university where he served as an Associate Professor of Clinical Dentistry and finally retiring in 1994 as the Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs. Most notable among Harvey’s contributions to the University Dental program was the initiation of the comprehensive care program of clinical instruction which has since served as a model for dental schools throughout the country. Furthering his commitment to the profession Harvey served in many offices within the Eighth District Dental Society, Erie County Dental Society, the American Dental Association as well as serving as President of the Dental Society of New York State.
Harvey also found time to serve his community throughout his lifetime. He served in the Williamsville school district as the supervising dentist, he was a volunteer in the Williamsville fire department and a member of Amherst Kiwianis. Harvey also found time to participate in youth sports coaching in the Amherst Hockey Association for a number of years. Additionally, Harvey was an avid sportsman and conservationist. His greatest joys were sharing theses passions with his children and in later years his grandchildren on the shores of Lake Erie.
A memorial service will be held in his honor on Friday, May 17, at 4:30 PM at the University of Buffalo Dental School.
