Dr Richard W. Munschauer, a retired radiologist, died on May 8, 2026. He was 102 years old.
A native Buffalonian, Dr Munschauer was a graduate of Bennett High School. His studies at Cornell University were interrupted by World War II when he was inducted into the army under the Army Specialized Training program. He was sent to the University of Buffalo School of Medicine where he graduated in 1946 at the age of 22. Dury his tour of duty he cared for General Norman Schwarzkopf Sr., Rudolf Hess in Nuremberg, and was stationed in Berlin during the time of the Russian Blockade.
Dr Munschauer was a member of the Radiology Department of the Children’s Hospital for 37 years. While there, he established Diagnostic Ultrasound, being the first person in Western New York to practice that new modality.
Dr Munschauer was a past president of the Children’s Hospital medical staff as well as a past president of the Buffalo Radiological Society. He was a seventeen-year board member of the Buffalo Zoo and volunteered at the St. Vincent De Paul soup kitchen for almost 30 years.
His summers were spent at Sugar Loaf Farm, Port Colborne, Ontario, where he enjoyed a good game of cribbage, martinis with many friends, and the exquisite lake view from his porch. Winters were spent skiing, which he reluctantly gave up at 91 years of age. He was a charter member of the Concord Ski Club as well as a member of the Buffalo Ski Club for over 20 years.
He was married to the former Sarah Jeacock for almost 59 years. She predeceased him in 2019.
Surviving are his three sons, Dr Thomas L., David A. (Grace), and John J. (Alice), five grandchildren, Richard W. (Andrea), Lyman B. (Joanne), Patrick J, Grace L, Margaret A, and three great-grandchildren
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to the University of Buffalo School of Medicine or the Oshei Children’s Hospital
A mass in honor of Dr Munschauer will be held at St. Louis Church in Buffalo, NY on June 13, 2026 at 10:30am. Reception to follow.
