Richard P. Van Slyke the former President and Chief Financial Officer of Van Slyke Pharmacies, a Buffalo landmark business for over fifty years died Sunday Nov 25th at his home in Williamsville. Born in Buffalo, Richard was the son of the late Clinton and Idabel (née Pfeiffer) Van Slyke.
The family business, started by his father and paternal uncle, opened its first location at the corner of Hertel and Parkside and would become a staple of the Hertel Avenue business scene. A second store was opened at the corner of Elmwood and North. Upon graduation from the University of Buffalo School of Pharmacy, He opened his own store at the corner of Delaware Ave and Sheridan Dr in Kenmore. When His father retired Richard took over the family business as president.Under his leadership two additional stores were added to the Chain. Van Slyke Pharmacies was sold to Fay’s drugs in the early 90s.
Richard was an active member in the National Association of Retail Druggist and a life member of the Kenmore Rotary Club and the Erie County Free Mason Society.
Throughout his twenty year retirement Richard enjoyed countless winters on the shores of Siesta Key FL. He was actively involved with the Bennett High School Alumni Association.
Happily married to Joanne Van Slyke for over 32 years together they raised 4 children in the Ken-Ton Community. Three of his children worked for him at the drug stores. Richard is survived by his four children, Richard, Paul, Alissa , Lynnett , six grandchildren and his sister Nancy Goff.
Funeral Services will be held Friday Nov.30th, 10am at the Perna Dengler Roberts Funeral Home 1671 Maple Rd., Williamsville followed by Military Honors and Entombment at Elmlawn Cemetery, Tonawanda NY.
