

Sonja R. McCollum, 84, of the Town of Cambria passed away on Saturday February 5, 2022, in Millard Suburban Hospital after a brief illness and several years of declining health. She was born in Big Run, PA on December 5, 1937 the daughter of the late Kenneth Woodrow and Evelyn Charlotte (Palm) Rimer.
Mrs. McCollum graduated from Lewiston Porter High School and then earned a BA from Houghton College and an MS in Education from Buffalo State. She was employed as a teacher at Holland Elementary and Erick Road Elementary before becoming a full-time homemaker.
Mrs. McCollum was an active member of Community Bible Church where she taught Sunday School and AWANA for many years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, entomology, sewing and cooking. Mrs. McCollum was the wife of the late William G McCollum, who died in 1995.
She is survived by a brother, Kenneth (late Lois) Rimer of Wolcott, CT, a sister, Lynne Syme of Niagara Falls, NY, one son, Mark McCollum of Wheatfield, NY, two daughters, Cheryl (Thomas) Lavocat of Williamsville, NY and Patricia (Mark) Travers of Ransomville, NY, 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth Travers, Cassandra Travers, Stephen Travers, Madison Lavocat, and Lila Swartz, and many nieces and nephews.
The family will be present at Hope United Methodist Church, 2914 Upper Mountain Road, Sanborn NY from 11-1 on Saturday February 12, 2022 with a memorial service at 1 pm and luncheon immediately following. The Rev. Matthew D. Kofahl will be officiating. Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorials may be made to Houghton College, Houghton NY.
