Adrienne Sommerfield Doppelt (née Adrienne Barbara Sommerfield) peacefully passed late in the evening of Saturday, October 25th. At the age of 89, she is survived by sons Roy (Rose), Joel, and Carl; nephew Jay (Anna), niece Sally (Reid), and niece Kasey (Jared); grandchildren Kristine (Jordan), Lawrence (Natalie), Madison, and Jonah; and great-grandchildren Conor, Cameron, and Faith.
Born on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, 1936, Adrienne’s life was full of love and celebration from the start. Her early years were spent on the Northside of Chicago with parents, Lillian and Nathaniel, and beloved sisters Cece and Arlene. Adrienne spent her summers at Camp Agawak, where– at age 5– she was said to have waltzed into the camp directors office and demanded registration despite being too young. From then on, she joined her big sister Cece every summer at camp. The two were life-long companions at camp and beyond.
Adrienne sharpened her wit at educational institutions Senn High School, University of Wisconsin, Madison, and later, Northwestern University for a graduate degree. After graduating from Wisconsin, she married husband Lawrence Doppelt, and moved briefly to New Haven, CT, before settling in Evanston, IL, where the couple raised their family. Adrienne worked as a reading specialist in the Evanston Public Schools until she retired.
An avid reader, Adrienne was always found with a book in hand. When she wasn’t reading, she could be found at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, or gabbing on the phone with family, friends, and mostly frequently, Cece. Adrienne will be dearly remembered and sorely missed.
Memorial service will take place on Wednesday, October 29th, 2:00pm at Rosehill Cemetery, 5800 N Ravenswood Ave, Chicago, IL 60660. For info: 847-256-5700
