I am so sad to hear that, I worked with Darryl at a mortgage company back in the day and we kept in touch. In fact I reached out to him and was supposed to see him in 2020 but it did not happen. How did this happen?

I at a loss. Some of my happiest memories growing up include Darryl.  I remember meeting at the YMCA— his second home growing up.  I was the new person in town and didn’t know anyone from York.  He instantly made me part of his crew  and made me feel welcome in Elmhurst. 

The world lost an awesome person. You’ll always be in my heart. Until we meet again.



Planet Earth was robbed last week.  Uncle Darryl, as many of his younger buddies affectionately grew to call him, was as genuine a dude as you’ll ever meet.  I was fortunate enough to get to know him well in the years following his graduation from the University of Illinois - through our fraternity.  He would reappear in Champaign from time to time, his presence always welcomed with great excitement.  His personality was LARGE, like his physical stature, but his heart was bigger yet.  As a fellow trader in the commodities markets, we would frequently bat ideas off one another, in constant search of the next big trade.  I will miss those adventures in the markets, and certainly the constant flood of his instant messages lighting up my monitors.  I will miss his advice, his appetite for mischievousness, his joy for life, and most of all his unwavering loyalty.

Gone but not forgotten, my bud, DK -RIP!

I met Darryl during my first week at the University of Illinois in 2003.  I heard so much about him through members of our fraternity and was excited to finally meet him.   
 
I hitched a ride with him to ISU in his red BMW 3-series, or shall I say red dragon.   We instantly became friends and have been hanging out on a consistent basis ever since.  He always took me under his wing and was the older brother I never had.  

 Everything about Darryl was big: his personality, strength, size, intelligence, love, generosity, voice, laugh and how can we forget, appetite.   We would often find ourselves 'maxing' with food.  Once, he told me he could no longer eat pizza, and literally an hour later, Salerno's shows up.   I think we took down to extra larges.  Darryl also taught me how to beat the all you can eat sushi system when over ordering, thus charging you for unfinished portions. If in a pinch, simply take the uneaten sushi to the bathroom and flush it down the toilet.  

On a consistent basis during my 20's and 30's you could find me crashing on his sofa at his places off Western, Bucktown, Uptown, Elmhurst, West Loop or Ukrainian Village.  I'll never forget that gigantic couch in his living room.  It could honestly sit 7 people on it, well spaced!

It was really great seeing everyone at Gary's last night to reconnect and revel in their love for Darryl aka Eazy Dezy, Heavy D, Uncy D, D unit, Dragon.

I consider myself lucky and was an honor and privilege to have spent so many great years with him.  I will miss him dearly and look forward to seeing him again someday.


Darryl has always been a great friend to me. I often found myself looking up to him and have many fond memories of him. 

I loved arm wrestling with Darryl and of course he did beat me every single time but he is the kind of friend who would care enough to pretend he was trying every time. (Probably a thousand times)

I can’t think about Darryl without food coming to mind at some point. I will never forget the time he ate a one pound package of spaghetti noodles all by himself or the time he answered his door in his athletic shorts eating orange fish eggs out of a styrofoam container.

Darryl welcomed me to live in his home for about 6 months during a tough time in my own life.  I'll remember his generosity, empathy, and fun-loving spirit.  He was so charismatic and with such a big heart for people.   He will be missed.  My heart goes out to your family.

I have so many fond memories of Darryl.  He was a unique, gregarious, generous, hilarious, fun-loving, and special person and I feel incredibly lucky to have called him my friend.  

During one particular year, Darryl and I spent just about every Sunday afternoon at Carol's in Uptown.  The first time we walked in, it was dead quiet.  The regulars--who were exactly as you picture the regulars to be at Carol's on a Sunday at noon--were wary of the two of us.  All it took was a few songs on the jukebox, a few beers, and Darryl's King Kong-sized charm to win them over.   Within an afternoon, we were regulars.  

When Darold (as the bartender thought his name was and we never bothered to correct) would walk in to the place, the energy in the place was instantly lifted and he brought joy to those lost and forgotten souls.  And he could always instigate raucous shouting between them, whether it was because Roger had stolen Jim's chicken a decade before or because Marie had snuck in a bottle of gin into the place.   But it was all in good fun and it was everything that Darryl stood for: he always made sure that everyone had the best time possible.  He always treated each of them as friends and with a sense of importance.  And that's how he treated everyone.   

I have never met--and will never meet--another person quite like Darryl again.  I'll miss his sense of humor, his goofy smile, and his huge heart.

Darryl was one of the young men that would hang at my house during their high school years. They were the football players.  Watching him play football with my son, Matt was exciting. It was the best thing to do on a Friday night!  He was always polite and kind. He touched many hearts and will be remembered with fondness. May his family and friends have peace and comfort as they celebrate Darryl's life. 

My deepest sympathy to the family. I spoke to Darryl few times and  he always welcome me with his open smile. His smile can light up the room. Prayers are with you this very moment.

Lee, Gary, and Loved Ones of Darryl,

I have known Lee and Gary for many years.  And, enjoyed wonderful experiences with them. Shabbat Dinners, Mentalist Sidney Friedman Performances....Plus, Numerous Parties at a myriad of Gary's Homes.
Unfortunately, I never met Darryl. I heard about him, of course, and, know that he was Much Loved! As I write this, his Body is being put to Rest. My Prayer is that Darryl's Lovely Neshama Will Have an Aliyah, and The memories of His Life, will Transcend the Tragedy of his Passing, and, Bring Peace and Comfort, to All who Knew and Loved Him.


We definitely spent a lot of time eating.  You could always count on D to put down 1/4 of the Cholent that our family made every year.  

Gonna miss you and your snorting laugh.  Rest in peace honey Darryl. 



Darryl and I played High school football together. He was an awesome friend and was always willing to help a friend.  When my mother passed away he was one of the first friends that was there for me. I lost contact with a lot of friends after high school but, I did speak to him after coming home from overseas and it was like not a day was missed called me by my nickname and everything. I’m sorry for your loss and if anything is needed let me know. 

Darryl takes me to an All You Can Eat Sushi Buffet  and as soon as we step in they come from behind the counter to great Darryl like a returning hero. They tell him not to go to  go to the buffet because they will bring him out his own tray. They bring out a silver platter as big as the table with 60 pieces of sushi just for Darrly. Of course he finished the tray.  Darryl you know all the others I can’t tell on here. Love you man

We were so lucky to get to know Darryl in the past few years through our mutual friends. His smile & energy lit up a room— he somehow made everything more fun & interesting. Truly a rare personality.

I only met Darryl as an adult a few short weeks ago at his Dad's party. It had been some 30 years since I'd last seen him. He was a joy to be with, an effusive personality, a gentleman. Rest in peace, good friend, good son, good brother, good father, good man. 

Great friends are a gift.  Darryl was that and more.

I was fortunate enough to meet Darryl several years ago in Chicago as we share mutual acquaintances who are very close to he and his family.  Over the years we spent time together at both his home on the north side and at different events around the city.  In getting to know Darryl, I noted he was always exceptionally kind, particularly driven, and truly had people's interests at heart.  He was genuinely interested in people and I will fondly remember the times we chatted about his career and mine.  I suppose these chats were a means of 'catching up' as we saw one another only now and again and since we were very like-minded, it made for good conversation and a strong comradery.

The zest with which Darryl lived and the kindness he showed myself and others will not be forgotten  - just as the memory of a cherished friend will be with us all, forever.

I remember how nervous I was meeting Darryl for the first time because of all of the stories about him; that he was this larger than life guy who could dominate a room. I found that to be true and also that he had a generous and kind spirit that put everyone at ease.  Making him laugh felt like a million bucks even though he laughed often. Darryl was a special person and everyone who came to meet him will feel this loss.  I consider myself lucky to have crossed his path and to have called him a brother. Rest easy, Darryl - you won’t be forgotten. 

I remember meeting Darryle for the first time when we played Eagles Football together in 8th grade. He was always smiling and cracking jokes. After our last football practice together as Eagles he invited me over to hangout. I can remember riding Darryl all the way to Oakbrook on my handle bars with our football gear. The front tire of my bike was almost bottomed out on the rim but we made it. His Mother made me call home to tell my parents where I was and she even reassured my parents that it was ok that I was over. Darryl was the only friend my that parrents would let me stay over. They loved him. At times I thought they liked him more than me. The Summers before and after our freshman year of highschool it seemed like we spent every weekend together at each others homes. I would ride my Dyno all the way across Elmhurst to Oakbrook just to hangout with him. Luckily for me His parents would give me rides back home. I can even remember going to Temple with him once so we could continue to hangout.  His Mom would give us rides to Blockbuster so we could rent comedies and racing games for playstaion. Sometimes we would go to a wooded area and shoot his pellet rifle and other times we would have wrestling matches together in his living room or bedroom where once an awhile his little brother Brett would jump on his back to help me out. He woul call me Big D with a smirk on his face because he was about 50lbs bigger than me. Darryl introduced me to Led Zeppelin and classic rock. He showed me it was ok to be sensitive and not hold my feelings in. He was a big strong guy with a bigger more sensitive and caring heart. He was closer to me than my biological brother despite only speaking to each other every few years. When I would randomly be in town and reach out on short notice he always found time to catch up and it was like we were good to go for a few more years. We were due for another catch up and I regret not reaching out sooner. I will always Love Darryl and his Fami

What an incredible person. We would drive home from college together...2 hours alternating between laughing hysterically about nonsense and deeply pondering how in the hell we were going to get wealthy one day. He was a flat out winner. So ambitious, so generous. What really made him special was how he made everyone around him feel...Like a million bucks. He was as real as they come. Tough as nails but somehow equally as kind. 
He was an incredible friend to me.

There really are no words. I’m going to miss you dearly my brother.

Whenever you entered a room the energy just always changed for the better.

Knowing  Darryl was a genuine pleasure, he was a smart, loyal, kind man.  He will be well remembered by all that knew him.

We never met Darryl. We are blessed to know Gary and Leigh who offer so much to life. From looking at Darryl’s  photos and reading how he effects everyone we realize Darryl was a true gift to anyone who met  him and shared his path.  
My favorite photo is Darryl holding  his baby and seeing his great “light up the room” smile. What joy!  We pray for you Gary and your family for comfort, peace and good memories. 

Darryl and I were introduced to each other about 12 years ago from Fischer.  We became instant friends and shared many good times and wonderful memories .  He was such a caring  person and had a larger then life personality. I’ll remember all the laughs, antics and meals. I’ll share a drink and a meal with you again one day my friend. Love you.

We are so lucky to have had Darryl in our lives.    

At birth, we boarded the streetcar and met our parents, and we believed they will always travel by our side. However, at some stop, our parents will step off the car and leave us on this journey alone.

As time goes by, others will board the car ... siblings, friends, children, and even the love of our life. Some will step down and leave a permanent vacuum. Others will offer joy, or sorrow, or fantasy and expectations, with hellos, goodbyes, and farewells.

A pleasant journey consists of having a good relationship with the other passeng our best. We cannot know at which stop we ourselves will step down. So we must live in the best way possible, and love and forgive, and offer the best of who we are. It is important to do this because when the time comes for us to step down and leave our seat empty, we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue to travel on the rails of life.

I wish you a joyful journey. Reap success, and give lots of love. More importantly, thank God for the journey. Lastly, I thank you for being one of the passengers on my car.

Darryl lit up a room.  His laugh was infectious.  Often sarcastically followed by a "Ya, right?"  His second day beard beat Tom Cruise, as did his good looks.  He gave big guy hugs.  We're all left with a hole in our hearts for someone we loved.  Uncle J. 

It was Thanksgiving and our house had been robbed in the city.  Darryl and I spent several Thanksgiving together and he comforted me and all the feelings of remorse for making a mistake were not so terrible when he was there.  He had a way of making the most terrible problems feel like they were a mile away.  It might have been that laugh of his or his genuinely huge smile.  Whatever it was there will always be comfort in knowing him. 

Darryl was a friend, a roommate, a role model, a confidant, a leader, and a brother to me in many ways. He encompassed the most unique combination of physical strength, athleticism, and brilliant intelligence I’ve ever seen in my lifetime.  Heart of a grizzly bear and just as snuggly. He had my back, no questions asked, ever, physically and mentally.  He was someone who I didn’t need to speak with everyday to feel profoundly connected to.  He was magnetic, electric, vibrant, and full of love for everyone around him.  I will miss him and look forward to meeting again someday soon. Love you big D

Darryl - I’ll always remember the day we met in 1999 - the beginning of an amazing friendship. Rarely do you meet someone with the energy, charisma, and personality of yours, I feel lucky to have known and spent so much time with you. I miss you so much.

Darryl loved good food and unique flavors more than anybody I know, and it makes me laugh to think of the infectious  joy it brought out. We went on many a food adventure over the years - driving way out of our way for Little Village tacos, hole in the strip mall Los Angeles sushi, aged steaks, shrimp towers, pho, Chinese, Korean BBQ, south side pizza, burger stands, and home-cooked dinners. I’ve never seen a freezer so well-stocked! Rest In Peace, Darryl. Your enthusiasm and carefree laughter turned me into a fellow foodie for life.

  I never thought in a million years I’d be writing something like this about you but here goes. I just wanted to say how much of a positive force you were in my life, the laughs we had at work, going out,  the trips we took. I’ll have those memories with me for the rest of my life. I will always will remember how Darryl made me laugh. He had such a great sense of humor. He also was a master of creating his own lyrics to songs such as "piña colada" Darryl you will be missed.
