October 30, 1923February 4, 2019

Dr. Harold Mendelsohn, 95, renowned sociologist. Husband of the late Irene; father of Dr. Susan Mendelsohn (Michael Rosen); grandfather of Ilise and Lucas Rosen; brother of Irwin (late Barbara) Mendelsohn. Harold was genius level smart, incredibly empathetic and disarmingly charming. In addition to having his Ph.D. in Sociology and being Dean of Social Sciences at the University of Denver, he was also the recipient of an Emmy, a consultant for the CIA, a former president of the American Association for Public Opinion Research and the author of a number of books still being taught today. These books include such titles as Minorities and the Police: Confrontation in America , Mass Entertainment, Polls, Television and the New Politics and The People Choose a President: Influences on Voter Decision Making. He was a great man and a role model for how to grow old with grace and dignity. Harold will be much missed.

Above are only a few of his accomplishments. For those interested, here is a link to his biography on Wikipedia.

Dr. Mendelssohn was my advisor at DU in the early 1970s. I speak for all of his students when I say how much respect we had for him. He was brilliant but always treated us as equals. He often got me through some tough times.

Most of all I remember sitting in his class listening to him closely and how his words made me think. It's because of him that I became a college professor teaching my students the best I could and trying (unsuccessfully) to channel his words and thoughts.
