Haskell Schiff, 99 years old, born June 29, 1926, passed away September 16, 2025. He was the beloved husband of the late Molly (nee Rice), father of Lesley, Brad, Rae and the late Darryll Schiff, and grandfather of Lauren, Nick and Emma.
Haskell perceived the need for recycling ahead of the trend—His simple idea: “They will run out of dumping grounds.” He explored and created a structure: In 1973 he expanded Unique Salvage to Unique Recycling—servicing many well-known Chicago skyscrapers and industrial clients in the outlying areas.
He was a resourceful innovator, yet decidedly modest.
A serious reader, listener and traveler, his special contribution was a genuine open-hearted curiosity to the many peoples he encountered. He set examples for his young children, as a volunteer at the Lighthouse For The Blind and Open Hearts For Retarded Children.
He taught confidence, courage, patience and supported the maverick spirit: Believe in your dreams—try again and again, success will follow. He possessed honest humility—examined his actions towards others and fearlessly asked for forgiveness. Many knew him as a friend. He always said he was lucky.
His life was a Gift and a Blessing.
