Howard “Butch” Mandell, age 87, passed away peacefully at home Friday January 14, 2022. This strong yet gentle man was dedicated to his demolition company for over 6 decades. Butch founded the company with his 4 brothers, (Sheldon and the late Marvin, the late Jerry, the late Norman) and inspired his sons to follow in his footsteps. He was beloved by his wife of 60 years, Sandra (née) Strick, and 4 children; Marci Barth (Gary), Michael (Emily), Rick (Ana) and Rob (Janet). His 14 grandchildren, Mackenzie, Kirby, Dylan, Taylor, Nick, Nolan, Jonathan, Mac, Joey, Mason, Bryce, Colton, Payton, and Marlee, adored their Poppy. Butch’s caregivers Cathy and Vyner lovingly tended to his every need until the end, with the support of Daisy, Joe and Ford.
Butch was born and raised on the south side of Chicago but was always a Cubs fan. Along with his devoted wife, they raised their children in Skokie before moving to downtown Chicago and then to Highland Park. While he was a die-hard Bears and Bulls fan, he notoriously never stayed until the end of a live game in order to “beat the crowds”.
Butch loved spending summers gardening and grilling at his summer home in Michigan. He cherished his red pickup truck, his many German Shepherds, an icy cold glass of Coke and Hershey Kisses. His legendary vice-grip handshake and creative nicknames will be remembered with love by many.
Funeral services will be held at Weinstein and Piser Funeral Home 111 Skokie Blvd, Wilmette, IL at 2 PM Wednesday, January 19, 2022.
Donations may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association at LBDA.org
Burial will be private. Family is not sitting Shiva due to Covid.
