Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Iris was the cherished daughter of the late Nathan and Helen Mals. She grew up with a deep love of history and a strong, abiding Jewish faith — values that would define her entire life.
Iris was the devoted wife of the late Howard Osten, and the dear mother of Rick (Kaci) and Scott. She was a proud grandmother to Colin, a fond sister to Michael (Joanne) Mals, and a loving aunt to Alyson (Chad) Eagan, Jason Mals, and Lindsay (Michael) Wesselman.
A dedicated educator, Iris poured her heart into teaching, inspiring countless students throughout her career. Her passion for history was contagious, and those who learned from her were lucky to have been in her classroom. A true Chicagoan through and through, Iris was a devoted fan of the Bears, White Sox, and Bulls — cheering them on with the same enthusiasm and loyalty she brought to everything she loved. She was a steadfast and devoted friend — the kind of person who always put others before herself.
Iris had a rare and beautiful gift: she brought light into every room she entered and into every life she touched. Her warmth, selflessness, and spirit will be forever carried by all who knew and loved her.
A Graveside Service will be held at 12:00 pm on May 14, 2026 at Westlawn Cemetery, 7801 W Montrose Ave, Norridge, IL 60706.
